Chapter 194
After coaxing Liam to sleep, Kristin finally managed to slip away.
Sneaking her business card into her suitcase, she wrapped her arms around Rhett from behind. “Let’s switch to a different resort. If Liam wakes up and starts crying for me again…”
It would ruin the vacation.
She wanted to spend more time with Rhett. This holiday might be their last chance to be together. Having him, even if it was just for a short while, was a gift.
Rhett had just hung up with York and was surprised to feel Kristin’s embrace. “What did Hanson say to you?” he asked, a little thrown off by her sudden forwardness.
“Mommy, I want mommy…” Liam’s cries echoed from outside, growing fainter.
Clearly, Hanson had taken him away forcibly.
Kristin glanced at Rhett with a fluttering heart. Their eyes met.
After a moment of contemplation, Rhett swiftly began to pack. “Let’s go!”
They couldn’t afford to be entangled by the little boy again.
Kristin, though pained to hear Liam cry, took Rhett’s wrist and ran.
After all, she had a son, and Liam wasn’t hers…
As much as her heart ached, she couldn’t care for someone else’s child forever.
Watching Kristin tug at his wrist, Rhett couldn’t help but smile. “You still haven’t told me
what Hanson said.”
Kristin stopped, turning to face Rhett. “He thinks I’m using you as a stepping stone, trying to climb up the social ladder with the Lewis family.”
Rhett stepped forward, frowning. “And what did you say?”
“I said…” Kristin took a deep breath, mustering her courage.
Some things, if not said today, might never be said at all.
“I said, in my heart, Mr. FitzGerald, you are the best. I don’t need to use you as a stepping stone to reach out to anyone.” Kristin smiled warmly, almost glowing in the sunlight.
Rhett’s heart skipped a beat. So this was what it felt like to be smitten.
He pulled Kristin into his embrace, humming in approval. “You’ve got me, and that’s all you need. You don’t have to reach out to anyone else.”
Even if it meant trying harder so Kristin would always want to ‘reach out‘ to him.
After changing resorts, Rhett called York. “Stick to the plan, but we might have to move it up. Holcomb is getting impatient.”
York informed Rhett that the Haywood and FitzGerald families had met today for a family dinner- all behind Rhett’s back, deciding on his marital future.
They saw him as Holcomb’s son, or rather, a pawn In Holcomb’s game, to be used for advancing their interests.
Emerging from the bathroom, Kristin stood on the carpet, still dripping wet, her hair soaked.
She was wrapped in just a towel, looking uneasy and anxious.
Different from her usual self, today Kristin was thinking about how to be more proactive… She wanted to do things that would make Rhett happy, with the little time they had left. After all, he was the only one who had ever considered her education and the injustice of her five–year imprisonment.
Hearts are made of flesh, and she knew very well who had been kind to her and who hadn’t.
“Mr. FitzGerald…” Kristin’s voice was soft, her ears red with shyness.
“Want me to dry your hair?” Rhett said, putting down his phone and tousling her damp locks. “You need to dry off, or you’ll catch a cold.”
Kristin thought they’d work up a sweat shortly and would need another shower anyway, so she tiptoed and kissed Rhett’s lips.
Rhett was stunned for a long moment. Today, Kristin’s initiative was making his heart
race.
Narrowing his eyes, Rhett caught Kristin’s head and kissed her deeply.
“What’s gotten into you?” he asked suspiciously.
Without answering, Kristin began unbuttoning Rhett’s shirt, one by one…
Rhett inhaled sharply. This kind of open seduction was lethal.
“Kristin…” Rhett felt he could die happily in her hands, “Do you want something?”
Kristin’s nature was so soft, even at his roughest she would only whimper, but today she had taken the initiative. It unsettled him.
“Just… just something Harriet taught me, to be more forward…” Kristin stuttered.
Her chest felt tight with anxiety.
She was afraid of losing Rhett, but if her presence only brought negative consequences
for him, she would rather leave.
“Hamlet’s quite the teacher…” Rhett chuckled. “I’ve had York arrange a new place for her to live and even got her a job.”
Rhett raised his eyebrows expectantly, as if waiting for Kristin’s praise.
Kristin gazed at him in surprise, her eyes sparkling. “Mr. FitzGerald, you sorted everything out for Harriet?” Kristin was excited.
Rhett’s lips curved up. “It’s the least I could do for someone who taught my wife so well…”
Kristin’s ears turned red at the word ‘wife.’ The title was intoxicating.
Embracing Rhett, Kristin dared to kiss his Adam’s apple, remembering Harriet’s words about it being a sensitive spot.
Rhett felt his last thread of reason snap, lifting her onto the bathroom counter.
“You’re playing a dangerous game,” Rhett said in a husky voice.
Every time Kristin sparked a flame and then cried for mercy instead of extinguishing it, it melted his resolve. This time, no matter what, he couldn’t afford to go soft.
Kristin, blushing deeply, took Rhett’s face in her hands and looked at him more boldly.
