As they spoke, they approached the front door, which was promptly opened.
“Mr. Nine!” the bodyguard exclaimed in a rush, hurrying after him, “Where are you off to?”
“Stop following me!” Gilbert said with a hint of disdain, “Keep your distance!”
“Mr. Nine…” the bodyguard sounded innocent, “Ms. Gomez insisted I shouldn’t take my eyes off you.”
“Ha.”
With a crooked smile, Gilbert pointed next door, “I’m off to see Ms. Gomez, right now!”
He moved to stand in front of the neighboring door.
Taking a deep breath, he raised his hand, grasped the doorknob, and gently turned it, just as he expected, the door was unlocked.
This was Sherilyn’s habit.
Worried that Jenna might wake up in the middle of the night or early in the morning looking for her, she usually didn’t lock her door.
This time, it made things easier for him.
Gilbert glared at the bodyguard, “Got a problem with me sleeping with Ms. Gomez?”
He pushed the door open and entered.
The room was pitch dark.
Using the dim light from his phone, Gilbert made his way to the bed.
Sherilyn was already asleep, lying on her side, wrapped tightly in the blankets, only her pale face showing.
So quiet, so compliant.
Gilbert’s restless heart instantly calmed.
His lips parted slightly, whispering so low as not to wake her, “Sherilyn, can I sleep here, is that alright?”
Of course, she couldn’t answer him.
Ha.
Gilbert chuckled silently, “No, right?”
Laying down beside her without permission would be akin to seeking his own demise.
Gilbert stood up and tiptoed to the sofa, thinking that sleeping there should be okay, right?
Exhausted, he decided, let it be.
Lying on the sofa, Gilbert turned towards the bed, listening to Sherilyn’s soft breathing. His eyelids grew heavy and soon, he fell into a deep sleep.
…
At seven in the morning.
Sherilyn woke up on time, turned on the wall light, went to the bathroom to freshen up, and then headed to the walk-in closet.
