At this hour, it looked like he was still fast asleep.
Gilbert didn’t dare disturb him. He slipped quietly out of the bedroom, gently closing the door behind him.
The moment the door clicked shut, Sherilyn opened her eyes. Her gaze was clear; not a hint of sleepiness lingered.
Still, she didn’t get up. She simply lay there, listening, waiting. She figured Gilbert must be on his way out by now. Only then did she finally stretch and toss off the covers with lazy reluctance.
Once she’d freshened up, she peeked in on Jenna. The little girl was still out cold, curled up and dreaming sweetly.
“Sophia?”
Sherilyn called out to the housekeeper. “I'm heading out for a bit. I’ll be back soon. If Jenna wakes up before I return, could you let her know and keep her company?”
“Of course, don’t worry.” Sophia smiled warmly. “Consider it done.”
With that settled, Sherilyn headed downstairs.
She found Candida, the family’s driver, and gave her instructions: “Let’s swing by Dr. Wilson’s clinic.”
“Yes, ma’am,” Candida replied, but curiosity flickered in her eyes.
Sherilyn had expected that. She offered a ready explanation, “I promised to pick up some medication for Rebecca White. She’s tied up at work and can’t make it.”
She had to give a reason. If Candida got suspicious, she’d mention it to Gilbert, and that could turn messy. Thankfully, Sherilyn had accompanied Rebecca to Dr. Wilson’s clinic before, so her excuse would hold up.
“Alright, Ms. Gomez,” Candida nodded, the doubt vanishing from her face.
Even if Candida did mention it to Gilbert, it would still sound plausible enough. The plan was solid.
“Let’s go.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
As Sherilyn bent to get in the car, she glanced at the vehicle behind them.
Normally, only two bodyguards followed in the second car. But today, she counted four. That was new.
“What’s going on?” Sherilyn frowned, turning to Candida. “Why the extra muscle?”
Candida nodded, explaining, “Mr. Charles asked for it. The Harrison brothers have been causing trouble lately. He thought a little more protection would be wise.”
