Karol’s whole body trembled with rage as she spat the words through clenched teeth. “You did this on purpose! You just can’t stand to see me happy! God, I must be the world’s biggest fool to ever beg for help from a venomous woman like you!”
“A letter?” Sherilyn’s brows shot up in confusion. “What letter?”
She knew the story was true, but it certainly wasn’t because of some letter. Something felt off.
Karol let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “Still pretending? Even now? Fine, I’ll expose your saintly act in front of Mr. Harrison this very moment!”
Dragging her injured arm, she hauled herself across the floor toward Gilbert, desperation etched into every line of her face.
“Mr. Harrison! Please, you have to help me!” she sobbed, voice breaking. “On your parents’ anniversary, I asked her assistant, Naomi, to give her a letter from me—explaining everything, begging for forgiveness! But she knew the truth and hid it from you! She wanted me dead, can’t you see? How could you ever want a woman like that?”
She inched closer, finally reaching Gilbert’s feet. Reaching out, she tried to grasp the hem of his trousers.
Gilbert recoiled in disgust, his tone icy and remote. “Are you out of your mind?”
He stepped back, looking down at the crumpled figure on the ground as if she were something utterly foreign, something he could hardly believe.
“If you’re sick, see a doctor. Don’t come crawling to me.”
“Mr. Harrison?” Karol froze, her face draining of all color.
A sharp, derisive smile flickered across Gilbert’s lips. “Even if Sherilyn told me the truth… so what?”
His voice dropped, cold and cutting as a blade. His gaze pinned Karol to the floor. “You had the nerve to stir up trouble, to spread lies, to drive a wedge between my wife and me… You thought you could make a fool of me? Whatever’s happened to you isn’t half of what you deserve.”
If it hadn’t been for her, he and Sherilyn would never have been torn apart.
Karol was struck dumb, her face ghostly white, lips trembling. “No… Mr. Harrison, please…”
Right then, she finally saw just how merciless this man could be.
