“Sherilyn.” Gilbert looked down at her, knowing they couldn't spend Thanksgiving together as planned.

“The day after tomorrow, first thing, I’ll come over for breakfast with you and Jenna. I’ll bring her a little bunny lantern,” he said, wishing he could invite them over to the Johnson house, but he knew Sherilyn might not be ready for that. Just a little more time was needed.

Sherilyn buttoned up his coat, thinking of Jenna's excited face, and nodded.

“Okay, I’ll tell her.”

Thanksgiving Day at the Southern District Sanatorium was bustling with activity.

Nurse Jane was walking Mrs. Rebecca White in the yard, saying, “Mrs. White, we’ve put up lanterns all around the yard. It’ll look so beautiful when they’re all lit up tonight.”

Mrs. White smiled, not bothered in the least. “I’m not that fragile, Jane. Don’t worry so much.”
