Sherilyn shook her head, clearly annoyed.
"After all this time, you keep playing these games. Is it fun for you? Because, honestly, I'm exhausted."
Her voice cracked, a hint of finality in her stare.
"All I am to you is someone to flirt with when you're bored. And Caroline, she's the one you'd go to the ends of the earth for, your true love."
"Ah."
Sherilyn frowned and let out a sigh, "I just don't get it. Why can't you just be happy with her? Why keep dragging me along?"
Her tone grew harsher, "Do I look like someone who enjoys being treated like this?"
"No, it's not like that!"
Gilbert's hands shook as he tried to hold hers, his adam's apple bobbing, "Sherilyn, you can hate me, blame me, but please don't leave me!"
"Don't you get it?"
Sherilyn looked at him squarely, taking a deep breath, "I don't hate you, and I don't blame you. I just... don't want to be with you."
She paused before continuing.
"I'm here, in this situation because of you. Let's just call it even and move on."
"Sherilyn!" Gilbert's eyes trembled visibly.
"Please leave, I've said all I needed to. I'm tired and I need to rest..."
Sherilyn closed her eyes and turned her face away, refusing to engage further.
"...Alright."
Gilbert nodded reluctantly, his gaze lingering on her now slightly pale face. He swallowed his bitterness.
"Rest well. I'll come to see you again."
Sherilyn lay quietly, pretending not to hear until he had left the room. Then, slowly, she opened her eyes.
He said he'd come again?
Had all her words fallen on deaf ears?
