Sherilyn almost jumped out of her seat in shock.

"Sherilyn." However, Gilbert reached out, pressing her down gently, "Please, stay seated."

Sherilyn frowned, confusion spreading across her face.

Then, Gilbert opened a velvet box, and inside, there was a ruby engagement ring, the very one he had custom-made for his proposal to her.

He took it out, held it in his hand, and looked up at her with hopeful eyes.

"Sherilyn, marry me. Let's tie the knot."

Sherilyn was so shocked that she was momentarily speechless, her lips parting in astonishment.

Gilbert, however, gave a shy smile.

"I'm sorry," he said, "I had planned to arrange a grand proposal, but circumstances forced my hand... I know this isn't much..."

"Don't worry, the proposal may be simple, but I promise, our wedding will be everything you've ever wanted..."

As he spoke, he took Sherilyn's hand, the other holding the ring, attempting to slide it on her finger.

"What are you doing?"

Sherilyn suddenly snapped back to reality, pulling her hand back as if she'd been shocked.

Her eyes widened with a mix of fear and disbelief, "Have you lost your mind, or have I? Marry? Us? Ha, ludicrous!"

"Ludicrous?" Gilbert withdrew his hand, his dark gaze fixed on her, "You don't want to?"

"Isn't that obvious?"

Sherilyn closed her eyes briefly, exhaling slowly, finding the situation utterly absurd. This man was beyond reason.

"You've known all along that I don't like you! I haven't liked you for ages! If it weren't for Jenna, I wouldn't have anything to do with you! Especially not now!"

She scoffed.

"Even if we had something in the past, the moment you chose Caroline over me when it mattered most, I knew I could never be with you!"

Gilbert listened quietly, his expression unchanged.
