"Is this Sherilyn?"
"Yes, it is."
"We're calling from the local precinct. There's been a disturbance reported, and it seems you're involved. We'd like to ask you a few questions. Would you be able to come by?"
A disturbance?
Sherilyn's mind raced back to yesterday on set, that commotion caused by Caroline's die-hard fan.
"Got it. I understand."
Call ended.
Sherilyn frowned, thought for a beat, and then dialed a number.
"Sherilyn," Gilbert answered promptly on the other end. "Isn't today your day off? Did you just wake up?"
"I need to ask you."
Sherilyn wasn't in the mood for small talk. "The fan from yesterday, did you have her taken to the station?"
"The police contacted you about the fan situation?"
Gilbert guessed. "Don't worry about it; I'll handle everything. She doused you with water and spouted nonsense, clearly bothering you. It was only right to let the police deal with her."
"Or was she bothering you?"
Sherilyn chuckled sarcastically. "I mentioned Caroline's lingering presence, and that upset you! Taking it out on her fan, are we?"
"Why would you think that?"
Gilbert's tone deepened. "Why must you insist on misinterpreting my intentions?"
He suddenly said, "Is it that you don't trust my motives are for you, or... you're just unwilling to accept that, indeed, I did it for you?"
"..."
Sherilyn was at a loss for words.
"Sherilyn."
Gilbert softened his voice, sounding both gentle and resigned.
"Can you let go of your reservations for once? Trust me this time? I'm doing this for you, not because of anyone else."
"..." Sherilyn's lips parted, but no sound came out.
Agitated, she ended the call.
