Whispers Turn to Whimpers: Could He Ever Change? novel Chapter 996

Gilbert wheeled Sylvia from the patio into the living room, leaving Caroline outside alone.

...

"Grandma."

Gilbert fetched the medication, poured some water, and gently helped Sylvia take it.

"Feeling any better? I could call the doctor..."

"It's okay."

Sylvia waved him off, "Just a bit out of breath for a moment there. The meds will do their job. Calling the doctor would have him say the same. After all these years, I know what to expect."

"Alright." Gilbert pulled up a chair. "Then, I'll sit with you for a bit. Try to relax."

"Oh..."

Sylvia sighed and nodded, gesturing towards the direction of the patio.

"The thing is, Sherilyn was at fault back then. But I believe she didn't mean any harm. Sherilyn was just too young, and with her and Caroline not getting along, conflicts were bound to arise... "Grandma, you don’t need to explain." Gilbert nodded. "I understand."

"Really?"

Sylvia paused, remembering his attitude wasn't quite the same back in the day, and then it dawned on her.

"You've changed. Back then, you put so much weight on your brother and Caroline..."

It took the old lady a while, but now she realized, this child was trying to repay a kindness.

She took his hand and patted it.

Then, she asked, "Your brother mentioned, you and Sherilyn, you're living together now?"

"Yes." Gilbert nodded.

"Oh..."

Sylvia sighed deeply. "You have to treat Sherilyn well. She's been through a lot..."

Her eyes started to water, her voice choked up.

"It's not been a day or two, but four years... This child..."
