Chapter 396
“Answers?” Louie cast a questioning look at Cyrus. “Do you know what he’s talking about?”
Cyrus simply flashed Louie a polite smile and shook his head.
When Louie thought he smelled something burning from the kitchen, he quickly returned to the stove with the ladle in hand and stirred the fish stew, muttering, “Weirdo.”
No sooner had Gregory arrived at Sinclair Group than Martin stepped forward to greet him respectfully, “Mr. Sinclair, the rescue team is here as you requested.”
Gregory gave a curt nod and stopped before the five members of the rescue team. His gaze swept over them before he asked coldly, “I trust that Martin has already told you my purpose when he reached out to you.”
Intimidated by Gregory, the members of the rescue team exchanged a look and gulped silently. “Y–Yes.”
Gregory fished out his phone and set the timer to 15 minutes. “I’ve got a stew cooking back home, so we’re running on precious time here. You have 15 minutes to tell me, in your most concise words, what happened at the cathedral lake 18 years ago. You may start now.”
As soon as the words left his mouth, the rescue team froze.
They hadn’t expected Gregory, who never showed any interest in bringing up the past, to do exactly that. It was astonishing, but they nudged one of their teammates to speak on their behalf nonetheless.

That man seemed prepared to dive into the story, but when he met Gregory’s overbearing stare, he cowered and replied stiffly, W–When we showed up at the lake after getting the call for rescue, you’d already been pulled up to the lakeside. There was also a little girl sprawled beside you, and she was Ms. Whitman.”
“Ms. Whitman, huh?” Gregory leveled a shrewd look at the man. “Are you sure about that?”
“Yes, Mr. Sinclair.” The rescue team member nodded. “It’s mandatory for us to record the footage and take notes of our rescue process whenever we’re dispatched. We can find the record even if it’s about an incident from 18 years ago.”
“What about the footage?” Gregory pressed.
“We didn’t have time to look for the footage on account of the short notice you gave us, Mr. Sinclair,” the man explained. “But we have a rather clear recollection of the incident.”
“In that case, what kind of pants was the little girl wearing at the time?” Gregory suddenly asked.
“Uh…” The man paused, then replied, “It’s been so many years, so don’t remember what kind of pants she wore, but I think they might have been white–”
Before he could finish speaking, Gregory cut him off with a terse, “You’re lying!”
Everyone in the room was startled by Gregory’s harsh accusation. The air in the office crackled with anger and tension.
A layer of cold sweat had broken out over the forehead of the man being questioned by Gregory. “I–I wouldn’t dare to lie to you, Mr. Sinclair! I’m telling the truth!”
“But I distinctly remember she was wearing daffodil–yellow pants at the time,” Gregory countered, narrowing his eyes.
“Oh, that’s right! She was wearing daffodil–yellow pants!” Another member of the rescue team clapped his hand over his forehead as if in frustration, quickly pulling his comrade, who had slipped up earlier, back in line. “Look where your poor memory has gotten us! What, are you so addle–minded that you’d mess up colors?”
After berating his comrade, the second team member gave Gregor an apologetic smile. “Yes, the little girl wore daffodil–yellow pants. You were right, Mr. Sinclair. What excellent memory you have! We ought to be ashamed ”

Gregory’s face darkened when he heard the man’s appeasing words. He stopped the timer on his phone. “Seems like the 15 minutes are unnecessary.”
“I–Is something the matter?” The rescue team was baffled.
