Chapter 335 You Are Too Selfish
Charles had asked people to prepare everything while they journeyed to Alzer Palace.
Inside the room was a chaise lounge with a blanket made from a white fox’s fur. Delicate desserts, coffee, and fruits were seen on the coffee table.
Three wardrobes sat at the side, all containing various styles of exquisite dresses. The fluffy carpet had two lines of high heels sitting on it.
The stylist and makeup artist had been waiting for a while.
When they saw Gwendolyn and Charles, they greeted the duo with standard courtly etiquette. Gwendolyn was unhappy. “I’m not used to people helping me change and putting makeup on me.”
Without delay, Charles waved at the stylist and makeup artist. “Leave.”
He stepped toward the coffee table, grabbed a plate of cake, and presented it to Gwendolyn. “This is a special cake from Erihal, Gwen. It’s very delicious. I had it made and sent here. Give it a try.”
Gwendolyn peered at it with disinterest. For some reason, not only was she lacking any appetite, she even felt slightly nauseous. “I don’t feel like eating anything sweet lately. Eat by yourself if you want.”
Then she approached the dresses and began picking which one to wear.
Immediately, Charles settled the plate on the table and helped her pick an outfit earnestly.
He eventually selected a high–quality, silver–blue winter silk gown. “This one looks great. The blue’s pleasant to the eye. It also has long sleeves. If you pair it with a white fur shawl, you won’t feel too cold.” Most importantly, it pairs well with the blue suit I’m wearing, making us look like a couple. I’m excited to wear a matching outfit with her since we’ve yet to do it.
Excitement swirled in his eyes.
Seeing that Gwendolyn didn’t grab the gown he picked for her, he moved his hand closer to her, “Listen to me, Gwen. Change into this one.”
She noticed the gown Charles had picked was the same color as his suit.
Without considering it, she turned to another rack and picked a scarlet dress. “No. I like this one more. I’ll be changing into this in the next room.”
Charles immediately scowled as he grabbed her wrist and pulled her back. “I said, change into this one!”
“Let me go!” Enraged, Gwendolyn barked, “You know me, Charles. You can’t control me!”
In the blink of an eye, his unyielding attitude and tone softened. “You’ve no idea how happy I was when you came here, Gwen. It’s why I’ve been doing my best to satisfy your every desire for the past two days. I won’t force you to put this on, so can you please wear the gown I picked for you just this once?”
Frigidly, Gwendolyn spat, “I don’t like it!”
Her simple words hit him where it hurt most.
“Do you not like the gown, or do you not like me? If Cedrick was the one standing in my place right now,

asking you to wear this, would you reject him, too?” Charles glowered.
Forcefully, he shoved Gwendolyn onto the chair and attempted to corner her.

Before he could, she revealed the silver needle hidden inside her ring and pressed it against his throat. “Don’t come any closer, or I’ll kill you!”
Charles laughed, so much so that tears were spotted at the edge of his eyes.
He propped his hands on the top of the chaise lounge. Because of that silver needle, he couldn’t close the gap between him and Gwendolyn.
“Could you bear to hurt me if I was Cedrick?” Melancholy was present in his tone as his laughter turned even more eerie. “Let me ask you this. Do you really have the guts to kill me? If I die today, you won’t be able to leave this palace alive, and Cedrick will be sent to the afterlife. Do you truly want Cedrick and yourself to perish with me?”
Gwendolyn was rendered speechless.
Indeed, I can’t kill him before I successfully seize the antidote. Although, he only said that because he doesn’t know a thing about my past with Cedrick. Cedrick and I fought and played with our lives before. In fact, this silver needle was once stained with his blood. The only difference is that I’ve always loved Cedrick. I did it for six years. However, I’ve never once felt anything toward Charles.
Moments later, she confronted, “You’re different from him because your love has always been too selfish and distorted! Your perverted possessiveness and desire for control are suffocating me! Whenever I want something, you’d threaten me with a condition; and whenever I refuse something, you’d still force it on me! You’d hurt me and then save me so I’d feel grateful to you. Your love is cold and calculating. Meanwhile, Cedrick will, at most, only act pitifully or back down when he wants my attention. He’d never hurt me! You should’ve known our relationship was built on equivalent exchange right from the beginning. Even if I marry you, I’ll never love you!”
Charles was frozen on the spot, the light in his blue eyes gradually vanishing. Indeed, every step I took to satisfy my obsessive desire to possess her was calculated. I… I don’t know how to refute her.
While he was in a daze, Gwendolyn used the opportunity to push him away and stood, preparing to leave. “I’m not in the mood to meet with Her Highness anymore. We’ll leave that for another day.”
“Don’t, Gwen!” Charles tried to seize her wrist again, but she foresaw that.
Before he could even touch her, Gwendolyn swiftly turned around and slapped him. “I can’t kill you, but I can still hit you, Charles!”
Her attack was so forgeful that it caused the edge of Charles‘ lips to bleed a little.
His skin was quite fair, so the slap left an obvious mark.
Gwendolyn sneered, “I’m sorry for using a bit too much force. Although, now we definitely can’t meet Her Highness with that injury on your face. I think we should leave this for some other time.”
Right as she finished speaking, she turned around and left.
Staring at her nonchalant figure, Charles wiped the blood on the edge of his mouth away bitterly. He lowered his head, concealing the unknown emotion in his eyes.
