After Gwendolyn roughly sorted out her thoughts, she quickly refocused and immersed herself in her work.
The afternoon passed by in the blink of an eye. Twilight illuminated the sky outside and filtered in through the floor-to-ceiling window, casting its light on her beautiful profile.
Ever since she was diagnosed with mania, she had been visiting Joshua's place every night for an IV drip for a week.
Her alarm for leaving work half an hour early hadn't sounded yet, but her phone rang first.
She glanced at the screen and noticed it was a call from Jennifer.
As soon as Gwendolyn answered the call, she asked, “Did you run away from home again?”
Jennifer didn't respond.
Sensing Jennifer's silence, Gwendolyn probed further, “Or did you throw another tantrum? Where are you? Do you need to come out for a bit and have a chat?”
Jennifer replied, “No. I've been good these past few days. I'm just a little bored studying at home. I just finished memorizing the information and wanted to play a game with you. Are you free?”
Gwendolyn thought. Oh. She wants to play that Honor of Kings game.
She quite liked that game and had grown addicted to it because of Jennifer's influence. “I was just about to finish up work. A round of that game doesn't take long. The time should be just right for me to get off work after a few rounds. Let's go.”
The two opened the voice chat in the game and started to play while conversing.
Initially, Gwendolyn planned to play only two or three rounds, but for some reason, her luck wasn't good that day as all her teammates were newbies.
After losing three rounds in a row, the two became determined to win a game before logging off.
Eventually, it turned into a cycle of not giving up after a loss and wanting to play again after a win.
While gaming, Gwendolyn had her phone set to esports mode, automatically rejecting all calls and message notifications.
Meanwhile, Cedrick waited anxiously at home. He had dialed Gwendolyn's number over ten times without getting through.
The twilight gradually faded as the sun dipped below the horizon, and the sky swiftly turned dark.
Gwendolyn sat in her office chair and was absorbed in playing the game without switching on the lights.
After some time, a click abruptly sounded as the lights inside her office were turned on. Cedrick stood at the doorway, staring at her with a grimace.
Hearing the noise, Gwendolyn looked up. “Hubby, why did you come here? I'm working overtime.”
“Working overtime?”
He hastened over and pointed at her phone screen, which was displaying a game interface. “So, this is the overtime you're doing at the company instead of coming home.”
Gwendolyn hadn't finished the round of games she was playing.
She gazed at Cedrick cheerily while buying equipment in the game, explaining unabashedly, “That's right. I'm personally experiencing the project I plan to invest in next. I need to understand it in depth to make more informed investment decisions. Don't you agree, Hubby?”
Cedrick walked behind her and looked at the game interface. “You're thinking of investing in the esports industry?”
“I think esports is quite interesting. We live in the internet age, so esports might be the future trend. I want to invest money to create a club, build a team, or something to that effect.”
Cedrick had never interfered in Gwendolyn's career.
She was never content being a pampered wife to a wealthy man. She had her own ambitions, and he would support whatever she wanted to do.
At that thought, Cedrick wasn't so upset anymore, assuming Gwendolyn was just testing out a product before investing.
He stood behind her, bent down to wrap his arms around her waist, and rested his chin lazily on her shoulder while watching her play the mobile game.
As the in-game victory announcement rang out, Treyton arrived home on Jennifer's end.
The two girls said their goodbyes and hung up.
Gwendolyn turned to Cedrick and inquired about his view after he observed the gameplay, “What do you think? Isn't it interesting?”
Cedrick buried his face into the nook of her neck and took a deep breath. “Indeed. It's fascinating.”
However, it was unclear whether he was referring to the game or her body fragrance.
“Let's go home and have our dinner, Gwenny.”
Gwendolyn nodded, allowing him to carry her in his arms and leave the office.
Cedrick was thrilled, looking at Gwendolyn, who was still sound asleep. This is such great news!
