She looked down and asked, “Do you find me annoying?”
Megan was taken aback by her question. She patted Gwendolyn’s hand, prompting her not to overthink things. “Of course not! You’ve brought so much joy to my life. It’s just that…” Megan hesitated and thought for a while before continuing, “It’s just that I can’t provide a wealthy heiress like you a comfortable stay in my shabby home with a spartan interior.”
Gwendolyn chuckled and replied, “No worries, Megan. You mentioned that your husband and son who work in the city will only be home once a year. I’d like to keep you company.”
After a brief chit-chat, Megan seemed to be more at ease. “You’re so kind, Gwendolyn.”
With a smile on her face, Gwendolyn continued to probe further. “You’ve been living alone most of your time before you rescued me. Don’t you feel lonely? If you like, you can come with me. I’ll bring you to the city to see your husband and son.”
Megan did not consider her suggestion and shook her head resolutely. “My roots are here. Although my family isn’t around, I must stay and guard the mountain.”
“But there were gunshots heard today. This place is no longer safe,” Gwendolyn stated worriedly.
“Just let me be, Gwendolyn. Even if I die, I want to die here.” Megan shook her head persistently and concluded the topic briefly.
Hearing that, Gwendolyn refrained from asking more questions.
Her expression dimmed as she recalled the gold bars she saw in the muddy ground.
Cedrick was there all along, standing outside of the courtyard.
The house was not soundproof, so he could hear their conversations clearly from the outside.
Is it really okay for a woman to stay alone in such a remote area for so many years? Moreover, she’s an unskilled village woman!
Frowning, Cedrick remained in the courtyard, but he planned to enter the house and check if there were any photos of Megan’s husband and son.
Bang! Shortly after, he heard another gunshot from afar.
Although the sound came from the foot of the mountain, it was loud and clear.
Subsequently, Cedrick received a phone call from Nico. “Cedrick, we’ve found the sniper who was hiding in the woods. When Charles and I rushed over, he was about to unload his rifle and escape. We chased him all the way down the mountain. I was the one who released the gunshot earlier. It hit his leg, and his speed slowed down. Fortunately, he was caught by one of Swain’s men who came to besiege the mountain.”
Nico had always been great at work, so Cedrick was not surprised at what he had achieved. “Okay. Take him to the helicopter and send him back to the bureau for an interrogation. Do this as soon as possible to avoid any unexpected turn of events,” he said indifferently.
“Understood.”
After hanging up, Cedrick called Swain to get updates about the process of besieging the mountain for a thorough search.
“Boss, we took the helicopter early this morning and landed on a nearby mountain range. After the closure, no one went up the mountain. That person must have hidden there way before our arrival. I’m afraid we can only find out how long he’s been hiding there after the interrogation.”
“Keep searching the mountain. Don’t miss a single thing, even if it’s a rodent.”
“Noted, Boss.”
“Tell me the location of the helicopter. I want to get Gwenny out of here.”
After getting a detailed report from Swain, Cedrick ended the call.
Creak! As the old door was slowly opened from the outside, its metal latch made a piercing sound.
Megan darted to the door almost instantly and asked, “How is it, Mr. Jenson? Is the person caught?”
Cedrick nodded in response.
That means yes.
Megan lowered her head and let out a long sigh. “That’s good, that’s good. In that case, there’s no need for us to live in fear, and we can continue with our daily routines, right? Let’s have lunch since it’s almost noon.”
Cedrick stared at her calmly. “Megan, don’t you want to know what confession the man who hid in the dark and fired his rifle made?”
