The bubble of hope in Monique’s heart popped when she heard Henry’s words. She had been so smitten by his gesture to stay by her side throughout the night, but his flippant remark had tarnished that feeling.
She bit down on a piece of meat and responded in kind. “I figured as much. Why would the great Chairman Moore spend his night taking care of little old me?”
They were always more comfortable with lies than the truth.
‘Looks like someone has gotten her spunk back,’ Henry thought as he raised an eyebrow at the woman. “So, how do you want to thank me?”
He took a bite of his food.
“What do you mean?” Monique asked in return. She thought for some time and realized that Henry did chase away that feckless date of hers and sent her to the hospital. “What thanks?”
“I am open to favors of the flesh,” Henry said lightly.
Monique spat out the food in her mouth. Some of the debris landed on Henry’s shirt.
Henry looked down at his dirtied clothes and glared at Monique.
Laughter threatened to bubble out of her throat, but she contained it. With an innocent expression, she said, “I’m sorry. I really didn’t mean to do that.”
Her cute and innocent expression brought him happiness, but he did not show it on his face. He maintained his unreadable expression.
“Really? I think it was intentional.” Henry let out a huff and stood up. He headed for the washroom.
Monique let out a laugh.
Hearing her laugh, Henry’s lips curved upward.
Moments after they finished eating, a nurse dropped by. She told Monique she had pneumonia and an unchecked high-grade fever, which caused her to faint. Monique remembered that she visited the cemetery that day and the rain might have exacerbated her condition.
Monique had trouble believing she had anemia. She never experienced any of the symptoms.
She was missing Angel, but her uncle had not visited her. Therefore, she decided to make a call home to let them know about her condition. She found out Henry had told them to go home for Angel’s sake. She spent some time talking to Angel before hanging up.
The fact that Henry prioritized Angel’s health evoked a warmth in Monique. She did not want Angel to fall ill.
Henry truly did care for Angel.
The nurse set up a new bag of intravenous fluid while Monique tried to persuade Henry to go home and rest. The man was stubborn and insisted he could nap on the hospital chair. Monique almost wanted to ask him to sleep in the hospital bed.
