“One… two… three… The big bad wolf is coming after you!” Monique made a funny face. Angel ran out happily when she saw Monique’s expression. “You can’t catch me! I’m the best…”
Monique turned around to look at Miss Sophia who had just entered her office. She planned to pay her gratitude one day. Then, she left and ran after Angel.
Miss Sophia walked out of her office with the cash on hand, but Monique was nowhere to be found. She walked to the main entrance but there were no signs of both of them. She let out a sigh and walked back.
There were still a bunch of kids waiting in the classroom. She could not just leave them alone and chase after them. She wondered how they would find a way to go home.
Angel ran for a moment before feeling exhausted and famished. She pouted. “Mommy, I’m hungry.”
Monique was not that hungry as she had eaten so much food in the afternoon. However, she had walked all the way from Star River Residence to the kindergarten and ran after Angel for quite a distance. She was so tired that she could not move any further.
However, when she saw Angel’s pitiful expression, she gently combed through her drenched locks and took out a handkerchief from her bag to wipe off the sweat from her face. Then, she put another clean handkerchief on Angel’s back and said smilingly. “Little Angel… Oh right, Angel. Mommy hasn’t got the chance to carry you in a while. Why don't I give you a piggyback ride?”
Angel’s eyes lit up instantly. “Okay!”
“Uhm, climb onto mommy’s back. We’ll reach home very soon. Hang on,” Monique said in a gentle voice like a soothing breeze that calmed Angel’s restlessness.
Angel climbed onto Monique’s back. It had been some time since her mom piggybacked her. The gentle breeze blew at her thick, luscious hair. It felt so comfortable that she was not feeling that hungry anymore. Soon, she dozed off on Monique’s back.
Monique walked back to the Moore manor with Angel on her back. When they finally reached, the sky had turned dark. Her legs were weak and trembling from exhaustion.
Mrs. Lawson’s heart clenched when she saw a worn-out Monique. “My child, why did you walk all the way back? You should’ve called me and I’ll send the driver to pick you up.”
Mrs. Lawson was trying to comfort her, but Monique felt as though her words were a thorn in her flesh.
She spent all her energy and had none left to even give a response.
