"Sometimes, we need to be more open-minded. Carlisle may have let you down on certain things, but he has been good to you for the past few years. I can tell he has a place for you in his heart," Martha coaxed.
At that, she observed Katrina's expression. She suddenly changed the topic, saying, "Besides, there's no one left in your family, right? If you divorce Carlisle, where are you going to go?
"Why don't you think about your future, as well as Clara's? Even the Salfords don't recognize her as one of their own anymore. What if they don't take Clara in after you leave our family? Please think of Clara's future."
Martha knew Katrina's weakness the best. Her words were both advice and a warning.
At the same time, Katrina's expression grew sullen. She knew what Martha was trying to say.
Martha immediately shot Carlisle a gaze, hinting at him to leave. Thus, Carlisle gave Katrina one last look before turning around to leave grimly.
When Martha and Katrina were the only ones left in the room, Martha's smile faded. "Katrina, something tells me you're a smart person.
"That's why I let Carlisle marry you. How could you become more muddle-headed as you grow older?"
As Martha let go of Katrina's hand, she spotted the soup on the table. Contempt flashed past her eyes.
"All that woman knows is some tricks to win over a man. She was never qualified to join our family when she was younger, let alone now—she is older and has a troublesome daughter.
"Carlisle treats her better only because of his sentiment about the past, and he was upset about how I broke up his relationship. If he really wanted to marry her, he would've done so after divorcing you.
"However, he never brought it up. That shows that he still cares for you. Don't you see how panicked he was when you demanded the divorce?
"If you could spend some time and effort to win him back, I'm sure he'll come back to you one day. What can you get out of leaving him now?
"I'm really worried about you. You're not young anymore, and you don't have any children.
