Your Love Is But a Dream (Clara and Wren) novel Chapter 244

But this time, Carlisle didn't react the way Shirley had hoped. There was no sympathy, no agreement with her words, nor any criticism of Katrina.

Suppressing his impatience, Carlisle spoke in a calm tone, "I neglected her before. It's only natural she resents me a little. Besides, what married couple doesn't argue?

"Anyway, just stay out of this. And for now, don't come to the office to see me. If Katrina sees you, she'll just misunderstand again."

Every single one of his words hit Shirley's sore spots. Not only did her usual tactics fail completely today, but Carlisle was also distancing himself from her outright, even forbidding her from coming to his office.

Katrina really had some nerves. With just one act—filing for divorce—she had undone years of Shirley's efforts and even managed to sway Carlisle's heart.

Shirley couldn't control the dark expression that crept onto her face.

Carlisle noticed her pale complexion and realized his words might have been too harsh. Thinking back to the past, he softened a little.

He pulled open a drawer and took out a checkbook. He wrote out a check and tore it off before handing it to Shirley. "I know it's been hard on you. Go out and buy yourself something nice. If this isn't enough, just let me know."

Shirley glanced at the check—a million dollars. Her fingers twitched slightly, but she forced herself to look away and didn't take it.

Back when she had first moved into the Zachman residence, Carlisle had given her a credit card and instructed his secretary to deposit a monthly allowance into her account for her and Ivy's expenses.

The amount was indeed substantial, but compared to the Zachman family's vast fortune, it was nothing.
