"I'm an adult now, not a child who needs to rely on anyone to survive," Clara said. "Besides, you don't even need me to keep track of my whereabouts, do you?"
Wren froze as Clara's gaze turned colder and colder.
He knew she would eventually ask, and he understood she had truly grown up. She didn't need him anymore and could survive just fine on her own.
Wren swallowed the bitterness within and explained softly, "I never meant to monitor or deceive you.
"I looked into your colleagues because of what happened to you. I was worried someone might try to hurt you."
He knew Clara hated this kind of thing. It was the reason why he hadn't run background checks on everyone around her when he came looking for her.
Not until she had been in danger.
When he couldn't find out who was behind it, he turned to investigate the people around her, but it still led nowhere.
Clara remained silent. She knew Wren had done all this for her, but his concern had come too late. It wasn't what she wanted anymore.
As for whatever was between her and Wren…
Clara lowered her gaze and said flatly, "I'll be discharged tomorrow. You should go back."
Wren smiled wryly and said, "I know. You don't have to remind me."
With that, neither of them spoke again, and the hospital room fell into complete silence.
