Your Love Is But a Dream (Clara and Wren) novel Chapter 288

Wren's expression darkened.

He knew "not needing anything" was just Clara's excuse. She simply didn't want to accept the things he gave her, but she had accepted Alexander's.

The thought of it made his heart ache. It was painful and bitter.

He looked at Clara, and the sorrow and disappointment in his eyes nearly spilled over.

Meeting his gaze, Clara's fingers curled slightly at her side. She looked away without saying anything.

Wren caught her subtle retreat, and his smile turned bitter. He decided to change the subject. "Breakfast is getting cold. You should sit down and eat."

Clara couldn't quite pinpoint the emotions surging in her heart. She pursed her lips and walked over to sit down and eat.

Wren watched her eat in silence. His heart still ached, but his eyes held a trace of longing.

He was leaving Larkston soon, and every second spent with her now felt precious.

Wren didn't disturb her again. He pulled up a chair beside her, took out his phone, and started dealing with work remotely, though his peripheral vision kept drifting toward Clara. Perhaps his gaze was too intense, for even though Clara didn't look up, she could still feel it on her.

She kept her head down and pretended not to notice.

She ate slowly, savoring each bite, but before long, she had finished her meal. After wiping her mouth, she packed everything up and stood to take it to the sink to clean.

Wren had been keeping an eye on her the whole time. Seeing her about to leave with the dishes, he put down his phone and stood up.
