The assistant stared at the man in front of him for a long time before finally responding and turning to leave, just in time to bump into Emily, who was standing at the door.
“Mrs. Foster.”
The assistant quickly called out to Emily, which drew the man’s attention away from the desk.
Daniel’s expression shifted slightly. He grabbed a blanket from the back of a nearby chair and walked toward Emily.
“Why are you awake? Are you cold? Has the baby been bothering you?”
As Daniel draped the blanket over Emily’s shoulders and warmed her hands, Emily smiled slightly at the corner of
her eye, but her words were full of concern.
“I couldn’t sleep without you. I thought I’d come check on you.”
“Just now, I heard you talking to the assistant about Sarah. How could she have gone abroad? Was it because of
me…?”
By the end of her sentence, Emily’s eyes turned red, and she lowered her head, feeling guilty.
Startled, Daniel hurriedly pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head.
“How could it be because of you? She’s just a child throwing a tantrum. Don’t worry about her.”
But there was still unease in Emily’s eyes. She grabbed the hem of his shirt and looked up at his eyes.
“But after all, she’s someone the Miller family entrusted to your care. What if something happens to her?”
Daniel rubbed her wet eyelid, his tone growing colder. “If something happens, it’s just a lesson for her.”
“She needs to stop running around all the time.”
Emily hadn’t expected Daniel to be so indifferent towards Sarah. Her smug smile could no longer be hidden. She quickly lowered her head, leaned against his chest, and a sinister smile crept onto her lips.
“Sarah, you’d better never come back.”
Daniel said he didn’t care, but secretly, he was still sending people to search for Sarah’s whereabouts. But every time
he asked if they had found her, the answer was always no.
The first week, the answer was still no.
The first month, the answer was still no.
After the assistant carefully delivered the news, Daniel’s body stiffened in his office chair. He sat there for a long time before finally waving his hand, signaling the assistant to continue searching.
