All eyes turned to Evelyn again. Judging by Lila’s reaction, who would believe Evelyn was completely innocent?
“L… I really didn’t know. If I had, I never would’ve let them do something so hurtful to Ms. Torrey.”
Evelyn tried to look innocent, as though she were the one being wronged. She’d always acted the part of the refined, kindhearted socialite on campus. It was hard to imagine she would go after Ariana out of jealousy, let alone using such cheap tactics.
But with Lila and Maddie taken away, even if Evelyn said she didn’t know anything, she couldn’t escape being associated with it.
“Relax, Ms. Granger,” the lawyer said. “I was simply asking in passing. Without concrete evidence, there’s no reason to bring you in for questioning.”
As instructed by Ariana, he made a point of rattling Evelyn before leaving with the others.
Evelyn was still shaking, unable to compose herself. If rumors spread that she’d played a role in this, how could she ever hold her head up again?
Thinking about it, she clenched her fist. She’d thought Ariana would be a pushover, but it turned out she was anything but easy to handle.
It seemed she’d have to come up with a plan of her own soon
That evening, back at the Lodge residence, Belinda threw a stack of photos onto the table in front of Ariana. “What is this about?”
The moment Ariana came home, Belinda confronted her. One look at the photos told Ariana these were the same ones Lila and Maddie had plastered around campus that morning–those ambiguous snapshots of her with William and Victor.
“Madam Mackle, someone deliberately wanted to ruin my reputation.”
“Ruin your reputation or not, there still has to be something they can use! I had these pictures investigated, and they’re all real!”
Belinda took a long breath and continued, “You’ve really let me down! You’re Brian’s fiancée! How could you get so close to William and Victor? And worse, you got caught on camera, and they splashed your face all over your college!”
“Madam Mackle…”
“Do you know Glea College is full of the children of our social circle? You’ve embarrassed us!”
Belinda’s displeasure grew. “I’ve told you before not to attend that college. Your main responsibility should be to strengthen your relationship with Brian and prepare to get married. Now look at this mess. People on the outside are going to have a field day talking about you.”
Ariana knew Belinda was concerned for the family’s interests. She said, “I’ve already called the police, and those two who spread the rumors have been taken in for questioning. We should have results soon.”
At Ariana’s mention of the police, Belinda finally nodded and asked, “Who’s behind it?”
“It was two of Ms. Granger’s friends.”
Hearing that Evelyn was involved, Belinda’s brows furrowed. ““That woman again! Hasn’t it been enough that she’s been working her charms on Brian all this time? Now she pulls a stunt like this? Outrageous!”

Just then, Brian walked in. The moment Belinda saw him what’s going on here.”
