Chapter 139
“Yes.”
Gwen gave Jonathan a bnce–over, her gaze sharp as she realized he was only an assistant manager. She said, ” Didn’t I request to reserve seats in the event hall? Is everything ready? I want to inspect the venue.”
Hearing this, Jonathan offered an apologetic smile and replied, “Mrs. Torrey, I’m really sorry, but the event hall is currently fully booked, and it may not be possible to make arrangements for you.”
“Fully booked?” Gwen frowned, her tone sharp. “How is that possible? When I called earlier, your receptionist said there were still seats available.”
Jonathan smiled awkwardly and explained, “There were sears earlier, but… A gentleman has since reserved all our halls. So…”
But Gwen wasn’t willing to let it go. Her face darkened as she retorted, “Mr. Rhys, do you take me for a fool? There are only a handful of well–known figures in this city, and I haven’t heard of anyone hosting a large event. Besides, this isn’t exactly an affordable venue for most. How much did they pay? I’ll offer double!”
“Mrs. Torrey, it’s not about the money…”
Seeing Jonathan’s troubled expression, Gwen’s voice rose. She demanded, “What do you mean it’s not about the money? Are you saying the Torrey family isn’t good enough? Does the Royal Hotel look down on our family?” Her voice grew louder by the second, her naturally commanding tone drawing the attention of nearby guests. Jonathan tried to calm her. “Mrs. Torrey, I’m not making this up. The hall has already been reserved…”
“I don’t care if someone else reserved it first! I called before them, and you should know that our Ariana is about to marry into the Lodge family soon. That will make me Brian Lodge’s mother–in–law!
“You’re aware of that family’s standing in this city, aren’t you? I suggest you think it over. You might not be able to handle the consequences if you offend me!”
Gwen’s remarks were sharp and relentless.
When she brought up Brian’s name, Jonathan looked even more uneasy. He said, “Mrs. Torrey, it’s not that I’m turning you down on purpose, it’s just…”
“Just what?”
Gwen sneered. “I’d love to know who’s as wealthy and daring as to reserve all your halls. Bring them out! Let me see for myself. I’ll offer double, and I refuse to believe I cant réserve them!”
“What’s all the commotion?”
A sudden voice interrupted Gwen’s tirade. The moment she heard the voice, her expression stiffened. William Kingsman stepped out calmly, his presence immediately drawing attention. Seeing him, Gwen’s composure faltered, and a trace of panic flashed in her eyes
William was Brian’s sworn rival.
Why would he, of all people, reserve so many halls in Gleason?
Jonathan quickly moved to William’s side and explained to him, “Mr. Kingsman, Mrs. Torrey here wishes to reserve a hall out of all the event halls you have booked. I was discussing possible solutions. Mrs. Torrey has offered to pay double if you’re willing to give up one hall.”
