Chapter 214
“Yes! It’s Maddie’s fault! I’m so sorry, Ms. Torrey! Please, forgive her! We’ll compensate you!” Matt was terrified.
They had never crossed a big shot. And everyone knew Victor was connected to the underworld. How could they ever live peacefully again if they offended someone like him?
Ariana frowned at the scene. “Victor, what is the meaning of this?”
“Isn’t it obvious? I’m standing up for you.” Victor sat on a nearby chair as though he wasn’t committing a crime.
“I’m not as reckless as you, nor do I want to settle scores using such methods.” Ariana furrowed her brows. She had no intention of staying any longer and turned to leave.
Victor’s smile faded as she left.
“Should we stop Ms. Torrey?” Hunter asked.
Victor raised a hand, signaling Hunter to stand down.
Every other woman who had tried to get close to him had done so for wealth or power. But Ariana was different. She didn’t want his wealth, saying it might land her in prison. She didn’t want his power, claiming she wasn’t as crazy as him. So, why had she approached him in the first place?
“Now that Ms. Torrey is gone, should we cancel the plan to target the Granger family?” Hunter asked.
“No.” Victor sneered. “If Brian insists on protecting Evelyn, I’ll do the same with Ariana. Let’s see who rules over Gleaston.”
By evening, Ariana had taken a cab back to the Torrey residence.
Inside the living room, Gwen was pacing nervously. When Ariana returned, Gwen rushed toward her. “Ari! The news says Mr. Lodge is calling off the engagement! Is that true? Say something!”
The Torrey family’s phone had been ringing off the hook all day. Everyone wanted to know the affairs between the Torreys and the Lodges,
Gwen nearly fainted upon learning about the potential broken engagement.
She had taken out a 90–million–dollar loan, all of which had gone to Ariana. How could she ever recover that amount of money without Brian?
Seeing the panic on Gwen’s face, Ariana immediately guessed what she was worried about.
Ariana feigned regret. “Mr. Lodge doesn’t like me. There’s nothing I can do about that. You shouldn’t force it, Lambert.”
“What did you just say!” Gwen’s mind went blank. “You’re saying… The engagement is off?”
Gwen felt dizzy and almost collapsed.
If that were true… What would happen to the 90–million–dollar loan? If she couldn’t pay it back…
Ariana quirked a brow and asked with mock concern, “Ms. Lambert, are you alright? Do you need to go to the hospital?”
