Chapter 393
Chapter 393
Gwen made a move to touch Ariana’s arm as she spoke. But Ariana wasn’t going to allow Gwen to touch her. Gwen’s fingers closed around thin air.
But Gwen wasn’t too deterred. She kept a smile on her face and asked, “Ms. Torrey, you graduated today, didn’t you? Why didn’t Mr. Lodge come back with you?”
“Are you joking, Ms. Lambert? I broke off my engagement with Brian long ago. Why would he be with me?”
Ariana calmly sat on the couch in the living room. Gwen hurried over to where Ariana was and stood in front of her. “Ms. Torry, you don’t have to play coy with me. Everyone knows that Brian doesn’t actually love Evelyn now. There’s no reason to call off the engagement!” she exclaimed.
“I know that you’re a kind person. You called off the engagement so they could fulfill their wishes. But you don’t have to do that anymore. Evelyn’s someone without any academic or familial qualifications now, there’s no way she can win if she challenges you.”
Gwen poured a cup of hot tea for Ariana of her own accord. Ariana didn’t expect the news to travel so quickly to Gwen. She already knew about Evelyn and Brian’s relationship.
“Ms. Lambert, the engagement was canceled. No matter what you say, I won’t be marrying Brian.”
“Why are you being so difficult? Anyone with eyes can see that Mr. Lodge has feelings for you. Now that the obstacle preventing the two of you from being together has been eliminated, is it really so hard for you to make up with Mr. Lodge? If we lose the Lodges, what will we do in the future? I’m sure you don’t want your father’s business to end up in shambles, right?”
Looking at Gwen’s eyes which were filled with panic and urgency, Ariana immediately knew that the loan sharks would soon come knocking on Gwen’s door. Gwen wouldn’t be spouting such nonsense if it wasn’t the case. She wouldn’t be shameless enough to ask Ariana to marry into the Lodges.
Ariana refused to give her stepmother what she wanted. “Is there anything else, Ms. Lambert? If there’s nothing else, I have to leave for the company to deal with some business. If you’ll excuse me.”
Gwen’s face turned stony at Ariana’s coldness.
Since she had already graduated, Ariana no longer needed to stay in the apartment near the campus. Ariana had been meticulous in her planning. It was about time for her to return home.
Now that the loan sharks were rapidly closing in, Gwen was beyond panicked. She felt like she couldn’t breathe, but she didn’t have the guts to pawn off the valuables in the house.
Ariana had to come back to keep a close eye on Gwen. She had to make sure that Gwen didn’t sell off any of her possessions in her desperation.
Her phone beeped. The messages were from Ms. Ziegler. Ariana changed into something presentable before asking the driver to send her to the company.
“Ms. Torrey, I’ve prepared the financial statements per your request.”
Miranda placed the financial statements for last year and the first quarter of this year in front of Ariana.
“These reports prove that Gwen has been embezzling the Torrey family’s money. Have you decided when you will be confronting her, Ms. Torrey?”
