Chapter 34 Save Me, Christopher
Diane had a dark and gloomy nightmare from which she couldn’t wake up. In her dream, she was running through a dark forest with wet brambles under her feet and a dark and starless sky above her head. Meanwhile, a monstrous beast chased her from behind with its large and fierce-looking mouth open. Even though she ran with all her strength, she couldn’t find the exit.
In the end, she fell to the ground. As the sharp end of the grass and broken branches pierced her body, the monstrous beast bit her with its sharp fangs.
“Aaaah…” Diane screamed, her arms flailing about continuously as she wriggled in agitation.
“What’s wrong with her?” Christopher asked Erin with a frown while grabbing Diane’s flailing arms at her bedside. It was the next afternoon, but Diane never regained consciousness ever since she had been rescued. She slept very soundly at first, but she gradually began to be so restless and agitated.
Erin packed her medical kit as she looked at Diane—who was on the bed—with a look of sympathy. “Miss Cornell is traumatized. The warehouse’s basement was cold and damp, and her health wasn’t well taken care of after her previous miscarriage. Her current sickness is coupled with her old ailment, and it has resulted in a fierce bout of illness. Her mind is now confused because of her fever.”
The furrows in Christopher’s brow deepened as he gently held Diane’s arms down and put them back under the quilt. “When will she get better?”
“That is hard to say. I would suggest that you let her take this opportunity to rest a while longer at home, Mr. Wayne. It’s easy to recover from her illness, but it’s hard to recover from the sequelae of her miscarriage. When I examined Miss Cornell last time, she told me that her waist never stopped aching these days. If her condition goes on with no recuperation, her illness will remain uncured for a long time.”
“Is there such a thing? Did she tell you that?” Christopher was surprised by this and felt slightly uncomfortable. Why didn’t she ever say a word about it in front of him?
Erin did not say much and merely shot a glance at the bedside table with a smile. “The pills that she has to take are placed here. I’ll be leaving first.”
“Okay.” Christopher nodded before shifting his gaze back to Diane’s pale face.
“No… Don’t come over…” Diane was still struggling anxiously. Even though her eyes were tightly shut, the look of fear on her face was obvious.
Christopher shifted forward and sat next to her without unknitting his brows even once. After staring at her for a while, he raised his hand and caressed her face, using his fingertips to move away the messy hair on her face.
Just as he was about to move his hand away, he saw Diane’s lips moving again. Her words, though barely audible, escaped her lips. “Save me… Christopher…”
Christopher froze for a moment. As he stared fixedly at the dainty woman in bed without blinking, time seemed to have frozen at this very instant. Perhaps because the warmth of his palm gave comfort to her, she quieted down a lot after uttering that cry; eventually, she lay there weakly like a delicate rag doll.
After a long time, Christopher withdrew his hand before he pulled the quilt up. Then, he got up and left the bedroom. When he reached the stairs, he saw Scott standing on the first floor waiting for him.
Christopher’s eyes were as chilly as blades made of ice when he came downstairs. “How is Norman?”
“He’s fine. The stab that Mrs. Wayne gave only hurt him slightly, so his injury is nothing serious; he merely screamed as if he was severely injured. I had him sent to the police station after his wound was treated briefly at the hospital. He’s locked away for the time being, but I wonder what you’d like to do to him…” Scott asked inquiringly.
Christopher let out a cold snort. “Does this kind of scum need to be released? He kidnapped my wife and tried to extort 50 million from me. Isn’t this amount sufficient for him to be jailed for the rest of his life?”
“All right, I got it. I’ll arrange for that right away.”
“Tell those people to take ‘good’ care of him,” Christopher ordered in a chilling tone while he walked toward the sofa. After he sat down, he held up a cup of tea and took a sip of it. “What about the company? Is there anything important?”
