Maverick arrived at the company.
Five minutes ago, he got a phone call. He held the phone with one hand and put the other one in his trousers pocket. He listened to someone talk on the phone for a long time in a nonchalant manner.
And his replies were short and perfunctory.
When the elevator door opened, he was surprised by what he saw.
The woman in there was a total wreck.
Despair flared up to her eyes when she saw him.
She was both abashed and helpless.
She bit her lips and looked away to avoid his gaze.
Maverick felt something was unleashed within him when he gazed upon her shy eyes.
He acknowledged and said something in Italian over the phone. Everly did not understand it. Then, he walked into the elevator.
She froze for a moment and then said, "Mr. Maverick, can I take half a day off today? I've torn my skirt."
Maverick just darted her a glance without saying anything.
For some reason, he felt ten pounds lighter.
Everly watched as he pressed the button to close the elevator and couldn't utter a sound.
What do you mean?
She was a complete mess. Couldn't he just leave her alone to her rueful heart?
What kind of boss was he?
"Turn off the elevator surveillance," he said.
Everly drooped her head and pulled the split hem holding a coffee cup. Then, she saw the scarlet light in the elevator go out seconds after he finished speaking.
She pursed her lips in shame and embarrassment.
In fact, she knew Maverick did that as a favor.
The elevator was packed, but no one had been willing to help her. What was she thinking? Why would they help her when they didn't even know her?
But she would help someone in distress.
And now?
She was surprised that annoying Maverick had actually lent her a hand.
Nonetheless, what she really wanted was to take half a day off and go home to change.
How could she go to work like this?
While she was complaining about him mentally, Maverick stepped forward and looked at her with a faint smile. "Secretary Everly, haven't you noticed there is a weird vibe going on between us?"
His eyes lingered on her exposed long legs for some time before they left.
His tone was flirtatious, and his gaze was tinged with contempt.
It popped into Everly's mind that....
When they first met in a hotel, he had just taken a bath.
Then, when they were alone in the bathroom of the dining room, her bra straps slid off.
Now....
She knew what he meant. He might be thinking she was exposing herself to seduce him.
She felt wronged. "I'm the victim. The elevator doors clenched my skirt and wouldn't let go. It was so crowded, and I got pushed around. That was how it was torn. Do you think I want my skirt to be like this?"
Maverick narrowed his eyes.
It had been crowded?
Didn't she know the way she was covering her legs turned him on?
