Laura gave Sage the cutleries and pushed the food to her. Laura watched Sage eat. Sage moved her cutleries and ate a little. “Eat more.” Laura filled her plate with more food and kept urging her to eat. However, Sage had no appetite and could barely eat. Her heart felt empty and terrible. Outside, it was hot and sunny. She thought the autumn rain would remain cold, but it had been unbearably hot for the past few days. They sat in the restaurant with air conditioning and cooled down, but the restlessness in her heart refused to go away. “I remember having a meal like this with Jace and Yoel when we were on a break from the army. At that time, he found a roadside restaurant and enjoyed the meal and drinks.”

Laura raised her head and finished half a glass of beer. She wiped her mouth and continued, “I used to joke with Yoel a lot. I thought Jace would never find a partner, but I didn’t expect him to be the first to marry.” She bared her teeth at Sage and grinned, “You’re his savior.” 

Sage looked at Laura, unable to smile. 

The two girls clinked their glasses and drank a toast. 

“I didn’t save him.” Sage shook her head. “I’m not that powerful. I used to love him, but love has hurt us both. We couldn’t save each other. As a result, both of us fell into the abyss.” 

She smiled bitterly and downed another glass of drink. Everything tasted bitter in her mouth. “Laura, I used to think that love was the most beautiful thing in the world. My parents were very happy in love.” 

Sage spoke slowly and almost paused word for word. “My mother used to tell me this. You must find a man that you love. He must love you with all his heart. Unfortunately, I only 

listened to the first half of her sentence.” 

Sage smiled. “I found the man I loved, but he didn’t love me. I wasn’t scared. I thought I was pretty, smart, and rich enough for him. He would surely fall for me!” Sage laughed again. “But I forgot. I was just acting like another woman in front of him. That woman is good, sweet, understanding, and silly. She only had him in her eyes.” 

“The more I acted unlike myself, the deeper I fell. I thought that was the real me. I threw away everything I had. Without the support of my family and my strong character, I became docile and less aggressive. At the same time, I had no soul.”
