In a cozy coffee shop, the customers and staff were enjoying the melodic soft music playing through the speaker. Then, the glass door swung open, and a young man entered.

He swept his eyes around the place before resting them on a lady in the corner.

"Is there anything you want from me?" Xavier stood in front of Sierra. He hesitated for a long time but couldn't bring himself to address her intimately.

"Have a seat." Sierra didn't let it bother her either. She pointed at the desserts on the table and asked, "What do you want to eat?"

Xavier glanced at the plates, but he didn't say anything.

She sized him up and giggled. "Relax. I won't do anything to you."

"What makes you think I'm nervous? I-I'm not nervous at all." Xavier was a teenager and at an age when he was absolutely rebellious. So, he met her gaze stubbornly, just to prove himself.

Sierra was amused by his reaction. She raised her hand and gestured for a waitress to come over. "I want a pudding. Also, give me a mousse for each flavor and a glass of milk."

The desserts were ready-made, and the waitress quickly served them. Sierra pushed the tray to Xavier's side of the table, nudging, "Eat the one you like and bring home the rest."

He glanced at her before he picked up the spoon and ate the chocolate mousse. After a while, he asked softly, "Do you think I'm useless because I couldn't keep Mom safe?"

In the past, he had always thought that Vera asked for it whenever she received a beating from William. This time, he intervened and had a first-hand account of how cruel and unreasonable his dad was. He concluded that Vera was a poor soul.

Tried as he might, he couldn't stop his eyes from reddening when he recalled what had happened that day.

His voice was hoarse when he continued, "You don't have to give Dad whatever you promised him that day. If he abuses me and Mom again, I'll take Mom with me and leave."

Xavier had lived a sheltered life, and this was the best solution he could come up with—to escape the place he called home and leave the heartless monster.

Instead of making fun of him, Sierra raised her cup and took a sip. "You don't have to run away from home. I've come up with a plan, so you and Mom won't have to suffer another beating."
