As the fireworks show ended, Chloe and her group made their way toward the hospital.
James had been hit by a screw from the spotlight rig, which had sliced open his shoulder, leaving a gash that looked pretty gruesome.
Chloe kept her eyes fixed on the nurse who was treating his wound, and her concern was evident. "Nurse, does he need stitches?"
"Not yet. Just rest for now and make sure the wound stays dry."
The hospital seemed unusually chaotic tonight, possibly due to a traffic accident. The night shift staff was overwhelmed.
The nurse glanced toward the busy hallway and then handed Chloe a roll of gauze. "I've done what I can for now. You just need to wrap it up. If you need anything, call me."
With that, she hurried off.
Chloe stared at the gauze in her hands, feeling a bit overwhelmed. Reluctantly, she began to wrap James' shoulder.
The wound was still oozing blood. "Sorry, does it hurt?"
James, sitting on the edge of the bed, shrugged. "It's nothing. I've had worse. Remember, I've still got a bullet in me."
Chloe was struck by his words. He was just in his twenties, like her, but he had seen the battlefield and handled a gun.
She had a natural respect for soldiers, which was why she agreed to help Smith by looking after James when they came home.
Despite James' rough exterior, she knew he was deeply responsible—a genuinely good person.
Her thoughts drifted to Smith, who was still in the hospital. Chloe hadn't visited him recently to avoid James finding out about her presence there.
She wondered how Smith was doing.
Lost in her thoughts, Chloe continued wrapping the gauze when James' voice broke through. "Hey, Chloe, snap out of it!"
Startled, Chloe asked, "What's up?"
James nodded toward his shoulder. "What do you think?"
Chloe followed his gaze and realized, to her dismay, that she had wound the entire roll of gauze around his shoulder.
He looked like a mummy.
"Come on, Chloe. I'm hurt, but this is a bit much, don't you think?"
James tried to move his arm, which now resembled a stiff prosthetic limb.
"Sorry, I'll fix it."
"Forget it. With your wrapping skills, even a thousand-year-old tortoise would meet its end."
Chloe rolled her eyes, thinking, "It wasn't intentional!"
"Chloe, when the spotlight rig fell, I saw a lot of people rushing towards you."
