He mustered all his courage to say that one sentence.
Even though he had rehearsed countless times and written numerous drafts of a confession, when the moment finally came, he forgot everything except this one line.
Chloe couldn't bring herself to look him in the eye, so she lowered her head.
Ever since Rachel had brought his diary to her, Chloe knew this day would come.
Chloe had been praying he wouldn't say it, that he would keep it to himself so they could stay friends. But no matter how much she prayed, the inevitable had happened.
"I'm sorry, Quinn..."
Chloe took several deep breaths before she could utter those words.
As Quinn heard her apology, his shoulders slumped.
"It's okay. I can wait for you to come back from Mamaica, or I can go with you! You don't have to answer me now. Take your time to think it over, even if it takes a while."
Chloe shook her head. "No, it's not about time."
She looked up at Quinn, seeing the hurt in his eyes. "I've always seen you as a brother. I'm proud of your accomplishments and your abilities. I'm happy to have you in my team and work with you, but none of that involves romantic feelings."
"If I were still eighteen, I might have mistaken admiration or gratitude for love and accepted Quinn's confession.
But now, I was approaching thirty, had been divorced, and was carrying another man's child.
I knew the difference between friendship and romantic love," Chloe thought.
Quinn's brows furrowed, and the moisture gathered in his eyes.
"Chloe, please don't rush to reject me."
"I'm sorry, Quinn. I don't want to lie to myself, and I don't want to lie to you. You're still young. You'll meet someone better, someone who's truly right for you. I've been divorced, and I'm going to be a mother soon. We're from two different worlds."
As Chloe looked at Quinn, she still saw him as a younger brother.
She knew it wasn't fair to him, but in matters of the heart, fairness rarely played a role.
"I understand. I'll see you off at the airport when you leave for Mamaica."
With that, Quinn turned and left her house, saddened.
The glass of water Chloe had poured for him sat on the table, the ice cubes melting, leaving a ring of water behind.
Chloe sighed, feeling a heavy sadness in her heart.
The following day, Chloe went to James to pick up the visa that had been processed.
He sat in his office, teasing her with a smile, "Is there anything else you haven't sorted out? Make sure you've got everything today. If you get stuck at customs, I won't be able to help you."
