Even though he was her father in name, she thought she should talk to him alone.
Daxton seemed surprised she'd ask this but stood up nonetheless.
Russell was old, so naturally, it wasn't him going out, so Chloe followed Daxton out of the private room and onto the terrace outside.
Leaning on the railing, Chloe looked at him. "You... don't like my mom, right? You probably don't even know what kind of person she is."
Daxton didn't deny it; he honestly didn't love Wendy.
If it weren't for that accident back then, he and Wendy wouldn't have Chloe.
"How can you accept me if you don't even love my mom?"
Chloe was genuinely curious about this. They say a child is the crystallization of their parents' love. She wondered how he could manage to love her if he didn't love Wendy.
She was just a sperm shot out at random; it didn't make her different from the other billions.
Daxton knew she was nitpicking at this point, so he turned to look at her.
"I really don't love your mother, but I've met her. Back when we were discussing business, Charles brought her to have dinner with us. She was knowledgeable, even sitting at a table with men; she wasn't intimidated at all. Instead, she could hold her own in conversation, eventually winning us all over."
It was something Chloe honestly didn't know.
Chloe honestly did not know such things.
By the time Chloe was born, Wendy was all gentle and loving.
Chloe had never witnessed those sharp edges.
"So she's a remarkable woman. Even though I don't love her, I respect and admire her."
He wanted Chloe to know that he didn't resent her existence.
"Even if you were an accident, I never thought you shouldn't have come into this world. It's the adults who are at fault, not you."
Chloe's throat tightened.
"The Millers are a wealthy and influential family. Aren't you afraid I'll squander the family fortune if I return?"
Daxton chuckled at her words. "If you can manage to squander it all, I'd say that's quite a feat."
Wow, that was quite arrogant.
"I only have two children, you and your sister. I'll do my best to treat you both equally. Since I've decided to bring you back to the Millers, I won't let you feel wronged there."
Chloe gazed at the dazzling crystal chandelier above, falling silent for a moment.
She couldn't help but wonder, if her mother had met a man like Daxton instead of the one who sold her to another man's bed for profit, her life would have been less tragic.
"If you don't want to call me Dad, if it feels awkward, I understand. You can start by calling me Uncle."
Daxton was indeed easy to get along with, unlike the arrogance of other wealthy people.
He seemed to have thought of every possible concern Chloe might have.
"You can choose whichever Miller family businesses you're interested in learning about. The ones you don't like, just leave them be. Dad's getting older and can be a bit impatient sometimes, so don't take everything he says to heart."
Chloe's hands slowly tightened.
Since Wendy's passing, she had barely felt the warmth of family.
Even Admas, though a benefactor, wasn't family.
