Before I could react, Lorik sensed it too. His body tensed, and in one swift motion, he grabbed me, pulling me into his arms and forcing us both into a crouch. His body shielded mine as a sharp, muffled sound of gunfire ripped through the air. 

“Thwack!” The silenced shot missed us by inches, the sound still loud enough to rattle my bones. 

I heard Lorik inhale sharply, pain mixing into the breath, but he moved quickly. He yanked the car door open and shoved me inside. The door slammed shut with a loud “bang,” and in one smooth motion, he drew his gun and crouched behind the car, using it as cover. 

“Bang! Bang! Bang!” His shots rang out, shattering the windows of the black car. The attacker, realizing they were outgunned, ducked down and sped off, the tires screeching as the car swerved 

away, leaving behind a trail of exhaust and broken glass. 

Under normal circumstances, Lorik would’ve chased them down, but today was different. He didn’t hesitate. He threw open the car door and slid in beside me, his face pale but determined. “Drive!” he barked at the driver, his voice sharp with urgency. “Take us to the hospital!” 

I caught a whiff of something sharp in the air, and it didn’t take long for me to notice–blood. My eyes widened as I turned to Lorik, my gaze falling on his left arm. His sleeve was torn, and blood was slowly seeping through the fabric. 

“You’ve been shot!” I exclaimed, panic creeping into my voice. 

Lorik’s brow furrowed slightly, but he brushed it off, his voice steady. “It’s just a graze. Nothing serious. Don’t worry.” 

“That still hurts!” I protested, frantically reaching for the emergency medical kit in the car. My hands moved swiftly, finding antiseptic and bandages. I began wrapping the wound, trying to stop the bleeding, but the blood kept trickling out. 

Despite the situation, Lorik managed a soft chuckle. “Your bandaging skills are impressive,” he said, wincing slightly but trying to sound lighthearted. “You must have paid close attention in school.” 

I couldn’t help but let out a small laugh, though it was more anxious than amused. “You’re joking? At a time like this?” 

Lorik’s expression softened, his gaze tender as he looked at me. “Seeing you care about me makes the pain easier to handle,” he murmured, his voice gentle.

He reached up with his uninjured hand, brushing a stray strand of hair from my face, his fingers lingering on my pale cheek. “Don’t worry,” he whispered. “It didn’t hit anything vital. We’ll get to the hospital, get a few stitches, and I’ll be fine.” He paused, then added with a slight smile, “If you’re really worried, just hold my hand. It’ll make me feel better.” 

I looked at him, my heart swelling with both relief and affection. Without another word, I slipped my hand into his, squeezing gently. 

I didn’t know how to ease his pain, so I did the only thing that came naturally–I reached for his hand. My fingers intertwined with his, as if that simple gesture could somehow lessen the weight of his suffering. His grip was firm yet gentle, and I felt a wave of guilt wash over me. 

“I got you into this mess,” I whispered, my voice barely audible. The remorse in my tone was 

mistakable. 

Lorek squeezed my hand, his eyes locking with mine. “Don’t say that. It’s not clear if they were after you or me. Given my background, I’ve got plenty of enemies. Maybe they just decided to kill two 

birds with one stone.” 

I frowned. “But how did you even find me?” 

He exhaled slowly, rubbing his thumb against my skin. “After you left, I had this… restless feeling. I 

couldn’t shake it, so I booked the next flight and followed you.”
