Although it was summer vacation, Paul couldn’t just rest endlessly. Taking two days off to spend time with Lionel and Mindy was already the limit.
“I’m heading to Shenzania tomorrow,” he said.
“Huh?” Dressed in a nightgown, Miranda was cating a pudding Paul made as she sat on the couch. She paused mid -bite. “What for?”
“A business trip.”
“Why so suddenly?”
Paul explained, “It’s an industry conference. Originally, Silas was supposed to attend, but something happened with his family. He couldn’t make it, so I had to step in at the last minute.”
Miranda frowned. “What happened to Dr. Quinton’s family?”
Given how Paul pushed Silas like a slave driver, it was rare for him to willingly cover Silas‘ responsibilities. Unless
something major had happened.
Paul cleared his throat. “Actually, it’s nothing serious… His ex–wife had a kid.”
“What?” Miranda straightened up, as if she caught the scent of juicy gossip. She perked up immediately and asked, “Dr. Quinton is divorced? When? And what does his ex–wife having a child have to do with him?”
“Why are you so interested in other people’s business?” he asked, sounding helpless.
“This is major gossip! Whether it’s about people close to me or not, how could anyone not be interested?” She was a normal person who loved gossip, not some emotionless saint.
Paul handed her a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice with a straw. “Silas and his wife… I mean, ex–wife… divorced two years ago.”
“Two years ago…” Miranda mused, “That’s about when we first met, right?”
“Right.”
“Why did they divorce?”
Paul answered, “Silas and his wife were initially DINKS. They agreed not to have kids when they got married. Things were good for a while. They had a carefree life with no extra burdens and no worries about raising kids. But one day, his wife suddenly said she wanted a child…”
Naturally, Silas refused. He was very content with their current married life and didn’t want to disrupt their stable lifestyle with unnecessary variables.
“The wife was persistent,” Paul continued. “Apparently, she even tried some underhanded methods, but Silas didn’t give in. Eventually, he was probably exhausted by all the arguments and told her that if she wanted a child, she should go find someone else to have one with.”
Miranda clicked her tongue. “Dr. Quinton’s words are quite harsh. And then?”
“Then they got divorced.”
“Well, her being pregnant now isn’t a bad thing, right? Everyone got what they wanted.”
Paul corrected her. “She’s not pregnant. She already has a child.”
