CHAPTER 462 IN HER DREAMS
"Leave this to me, Ms. Grant. I'll look into the matter," Albert said after racing into the home.
Madeline had planned to have Albert drop by because there were only a handful of people around her who she could trust. The expression on his face had her hesitate.
She had a feeling that this had something to do with the person who saved her five years ago.
"Mommy! Mommy! We're back!" Thomas' cheerful voice could be heard from the doorway. Madeline's heart skipped a beat to see her children running in.
She shot Albert a confused look. She had only just told Albert to get the kids dressed and sent to school but he instead brought them home.
"Zeke? You're injured?" Madeline felt cold wash over her at the sight of the blood stains on her daughter's white school uniform.
She checked her thoroughly for injuries to find none.
"Please calm yourself, Ms. Grant. No one was hurt. Ms. Zeke spilled red ink on herself." Albert ushered the startled Mackenzie to Colt.
Madeline slowly calmed herself. She didn't know why she suddenly felt so restless. Her every emotion felt as if it were being magnified a hundredfold.
"What's wrong, Mommy?" Colt reached out worriedly to his mother.
She picked him up in her arms and said to the children, "I'm okay. Let's get you to your rooms."
"Did he make you angry Mommy?" Thomas glared at Bruno who had just left the guest room alongside Noah.
He did not have a good impression of the man who attempted to kidnap him.
He wouldn't mind teaching Bruno a lesson if he messed with his mother.
Bruno, meanwhile, flashed his hostile grandson an integrating smile only to receive a warning look from his other grandson.
They were now a unit.
"You should leave. Stay away if it's nothing important," Noah said to the dazed Bruno.
Bruno shook his head. "No! I need to stay here with you. It's safer to stick together."
"Are you sure? All your injuries are minor while Madeline nearly lost her life." Noah shot him a cold smile as if his choice was incomparably stupid.
Bruno hesitated. Looking back at everything that happened to him, the incidents were nowhere near life-threatening but what happened with Madeline was clearly an attempt on her life.
Wayne escorted the man out of the premises under Noah's orders.
Bruno might've changed but he didn't care about Madeline at all. All the better to send him away. They didn't need a man who cared only for himself around them.
By the time Madeline settled the children, Albert was long gone. Noah, meanwhile, was whispering something to Wayne before the latter also left.
Noah turned around as if nothing had happened and asked, "What do you feel like having for dinner?"
"You said that a lucky charm will bring bad luck. Why?" Madeline asked and took off the necklace it hung from to give it to him.
Noah fiddled with it before putting it back on her. "It's yours to keep. You should keep wearing it."
"Are you trying to mess with me again, Mr. Quincy?" She knew at once that he was going to attempt to hide the matter from her to keep her uninvolved.
Noah helplessly explained, "I'm not. I just don't know what this is."
"So why did you try so hard to get it?" She expressed her disbelief.
He pulled out a piece of paper from his wallet and handed it to her. "This is something that Grandpa left behind. He said to stay away from this thing. Touching it would invite disaster."
She compared the lucky charm she had in her hand to the one drawn on the piece of paper. It was the exact same. The degree of wear and tear of the parchment indicated to her that it was old.
"The Quincy Corporation almost went bankrupt because of that charm. The exact reason for it? Grandpa refused to tell me. I investigated myself but nothing was ever found," he said regretfully.
He wasn't as worried as Madeline as he had no belief in the supernatural and knew himself capable of protecting her.
Madeline, meanwhile, felt strongly about it after having worn the lucky charm for several days now. She felt empty after taking it off.
She believed that it was evil and could tug at her emotions.
"Don't worry. I'm here. You'll be fine," he tried to console the pale-faced woman.
Madeline didn't know what to do and put the necklace back on to stabilize her emotions.
"Stay home and don't go anywhere. I've strengthened the security outside. Call me if anything happens," Noah said and left the villa. He received news from Wayne that Annalise had disappeared. The police were investigating the engagement party and needed him there.
Madeline called Joseph after Noah left.
The call connected but he sounded frazzled. All he said was one thing and hung up before she managed to get a single word in.
"Wear that lucky charm. Make sure it's on every day."
She touched the charm hanging from her neck and went back to her room to change into her stealth cloak. She got a few pinhole cameras and went to Bruno's place.
She got out of the car, climbed up the window, and entered his room.
Bruno now lived a simple life. There was nothing in the room except for a big wardrobe and a bed.
He was sleeping and snoring away in bed.
She carefully installed the cameras at the head of his bed and in his closet. Some were on a few of his clothing and every inch of his home as well as in his car.
She then had Jacob monitor these cameras and send her the footage if anything abnormal occurred.
She thought the lucky charm was evil but she didn't believe these accidents were caused by it.
She then went to Joseph's rose castle again. Unfortunately, since the dungeon girl incident, the castle had been left desolate. Nothing was found there.
On her way home, she received a call from Elise.
"How are you and Mr. Quincy? Did you know? After Annalise made a fool of herself, she caused a big fuss at the engagement party. She cried and said she was being set up, and was targeting you, but I shot back at her! You were right there. She can sling mud on you in her dreams."
It was clear from her voice that she was excited. She didn't want to disturb Madeline's alone time with Noah. That was why she held back for so long before calling.
