I’m Not Letting You Go Ever Again
I’m Not Letting You Go Ever Again
But he didn’t actually go into the town proper.
His mission took him to a mountain in its vicinity.
He spent days in a dense forest and could count the number of strangers he met on one hand.
He was positive he had not seen Kira there.
But why did he find her face so familiar?
It wasn’t an important issue, but it niggled at him.
Kira came to
her sen
senses when Gideon was less
s than five metres away.
For some reason, she turned on her heel and started walking a
away.
She wasn’t about to greet her ex–boyfriend like some long–lost acquaintance,
Kira scanned the surroundings for a place to hide.
Her head was spinning.
On Friday night, she got into Kayleigh’s car almost right after she ran into Gideon on the street.
After that came the confrontation with the actress.
The beating from the bodyguard.
Then the appearance of Giana.
Then the arrest.
Then the night in jail.
And then the ride to the hospital.
One thing followed hard on the heels of another.
Kira had had no time to think about Gideon.
She was ready to dismiss it as a product of her sleep–deprived imagination, or maybe it was just someone who looked like Gideon.
But it was not.
Gideon’s face had been etched on her memory.
She thought she’d forgotten all about him and his act of betrayal, but his face was always hovering somewhere in the background of her mind.
Kira wasn’t ready to deal with it.
She picked up her pace and was practically sprinting.
With one eye on Gideon’s looming form, she didn’t watch where she was going.
With a loud crash, she bumped into a waitress who was just coming out of a room.
‘Oh my god!‘ the waitress cried out.
The collision had knocked the expensive–looking bottle of wine from her tray.
It dropped onto the carpeted floor with a muffled thud.
Red liquid spilt out and soon formed a small pool.
“Watch where you’re going!‘ the waitress snapped.
‘I’m so sorry.” Kira immediately apologised.
The waitress grabbed hold of Kira’s arm. ‘You can’t leave. This bottle costs two months of my salary going to flip out!!
Kira’s mind was buzzing.
She was about to speak when a man’s voice suddenly sounded behind her, ‘Kira?‘
She froze.
She stood stock–still, not daring to move a musele.
Footsteps approached.
Gideon staggered towards the girl, swaying a little.
He was more than a little drunk.
The light in the hallway was dim.
When he caught a fleeting glimpse of the girl some distance away, he couldn’t be sure.
My manager is
But there was just something about the way she moved and the way she kept looking over her shoulder back at him, that made him give chase.
‘Kira,‘ Gideon was almost upon her. ‘Is that you?
Kira stepped forward into a patch of shadow cast by a faux moose head wall mount.
She squatted down to pick up the bottle on the ground.
When she looked up, she was holding up the bottle, which shielded half of her face.
The other half was covered in shadow.
‘Sir, were you
‘Sir, were you talking to me?‘ She spoke in a falsetto voice.
Gideon squinted.
He couldn’t quite make out her face.
Kira, still carrying the bottle, turned to the waitress, whose nametag over her left breast pocket identified her as Caroline.
“Caroline, I’m so sorry.‘ Kira sounded flustered. ‘It’s my first day here. I was in a rush, Pll be more careful next time. Please don’t tell the manager, okay?”
“What you talking abo-
Before the waitress could finish speaking, Kira leaned forward to grab her wrist. ‘I’ll pay for the spilt wine, I promise. Just please don’t tell the manager. I don’t want to be fired.‘
The waitress was rendered speechless.
“Sir, if you’re looking for the restroom, it’s down the hall to your left.‘ Kira sald to Gideon.
She stood up, keeping the waitress between her and Gideon. ‘The customers are waiting. Let’s go.
She started walldng; away from Gideon, but she didn’t get far.
Her wrist was seized by a strong hand.
Kira sighed silently.
So the ruse had failed.
She should have known.
Even drunk, Gideon was not one to be fooled by such a simple trick.
He had always been so much smarter than her.
‘Kira.‘ Gideon’s voice quivered. ‘I know it’s you.‘
Kira didn’t move.
She smelled red wine and tobacco on his breath.
