‘Well what?‘ 

‘Do you like Luca?” 

‘I already told you, I was just kidding.‘ 

Her eyes were still red, but the feisty spirit had returned, now that the danger of public ignominy had passed. 

‘And I told you, it wasn’t funny.‘ 

‘Maybe you should learn from Captain O’Neill and develop a sense of humour,‘ she muttered under her breath. 

‘What did you say?‘ Austyn narrowed his eyes. 

‘Nothing,‘ Kira said quickly. ‘I don’t have any feelings for Captain O’Neill, I promise. I was just being friendly to him because he’s your friend, and he helped Giana and me out of a tight spot.‘ 

‘Are you still mad at me for that?” 

‘For what?‘ 

‘For not getting you out of the police station.‘ 

Kira cast her eyes to the floor. ‘No.‘ 

Austyn chewed on the filter tip of the cigarette, itching for a smoke. 

For a long while, neither spoke. 

Outside the restroom, footsteps approached and paused at the door. 

Kira tensed. 

A woman’s indistinct voice was heard. 

Then the sound of heels clacking away. 

Austyn said slowly, ‘It was an oversight on my part.” 

Kira’s head snapped up. 

‘I shouldn’t have left everything to the lawyer without getting the full picture first. I should’ve… Anyway, you have the right to be angry.” 

Kira stared at him. 

Was that an apology she just heard? 

The arrogant, overbearing, uncommunicative man was explaining himself to her? 

Kira had an urge to stick her head out the window, just to check if there was a blue moon hanging in the sky. 

In her experience, for the M Group’s president to explain himself to anyone was as rare as, if not more so than, a blue- 

moon event. 

Kira was astonished, impressed, and a little touched. 

She was the type to respond to persuasion but not coercion. 

A kind word and a soft voice disarmed her within a New York minute. 

Glana once joked that Kira was the fly that could be caught with honey than vinegar. 

Though Austyn’s voice wasn’t exactly soft, Kira knew it couldn’t have been easy for a proud man like him to admit he 

was wrong- 

She smoothed out her crumpled t–shirt. 

‘It’s okay,‘ she said in a small voice. ‘I understand. Kal told me everything.”

Austyn looked straight at her. ‘What did he tell you?” 

‘He told me that you were on a business trip in Farindon, that you didn’t know I was the one who hit Kayleigh with a brick, and that you didn’t know I was arrested till Captain O’Neill told you on Saturday afternoon.” 

Austyn had not realised his assistant was a blabbermouth. 

If Kai had told her everything, then he’d just explained himself for nought. 

Austyn crossed his arms, looking slightly miffed. 

‘So I understand why you didn’t show up at the police station on Friday night,‘ Kira said, brightening up. ‘You weren’t even in Stamford. I was mad at you, but I’m not anymore. I forgive you.” 

She was mad at the uncaring Austyn who left her to rot in a holding cell. 

But she couldn’t be mad at the Austyn who didn’t know. 

Besides, he’d come to her as soon as he learned the truth. 

She was grateful. 

“How very magnanimous of you,‘ Austyn said. 

The sarcasm in his voice needled Kira. 

What did she do wrong now? 

She was wrong to be mad at him, and now she was wrong to forgive him? 

Kira bit back a snarky remark of her own. 

Austyn considered docking his assistant’s pay. 

His attempt to explain was rendered moot by Kai’s blabbing 

It made him look like a fool. 

Austyn carefully watched Kira’s face for any sign of smugness. 

He had always had the upper hand in their relationship. 

She was invariably the one to back down first if there was a conflict. 

Would she gloat over taking him down a peg this time? 

Kira didn’t notice her husband’s scrutinising gaze. 

She was combing her hair with her fingers in front of the mirror. 

Her lips were slightly swollen. 

The hem of her white t–shirt had ridden up. 

She was wearing a pair of dark blue, figure–hugging denim jeans. 

Austyn caught himself staring 

He looked away when he realised he was getting excited again. 

“Let’s go,‘ Kira said.
