‘I don’t even know what I did to offend the M Group’s president.‘ Michael had been tearing his hair out over this. ‘I tried to strike up a conversation with him at a party once, but that was years ago. I doubt if he remembered my name. We are not even in the same line of business. Why’s he trying to crush my company?”
Michael looked at his daughter. ‘Georgina, did you or your mother do something?‘
Georgina immediately shook her head.
But her thought flicked to Kira straightaway.
She was convinced the girl had something to do with this.
At the hospital, the man who stood up for Kira looked like a big shot.
Georgina wasn’t sure if he was connected with the M Group, but if anyone had a reason to target her dad’s company, it was that bitch.
‘I’m going to get you for this, bitch!‘ Georgina roared into the phone.
Kira dipped a chamomile teabag into her mug of hot water. ‘First of all, I don’t know what sugar daddy you’re talking about. Second of all, I have no idea what happened to your dad’s company. You’re barking up the wrong tree here. Thirdly, if you call me again with that kind of language, I’m going to wash out that mouth of yours with soap!! She stabbed at the button to end the call.
When it was noon, Kira started saving her work on the computer, getting ready for lunch.
A commotion started near the office entrance.
Someone tapped her on the shoulder. ‘Miss Hewitt.”
She spun around. ‘Kai?‘
The assistant took a polite step backwards, acting all business–like. ‘Miss Hewitt, please come with me.”
‘Where to?!
“The forty–eighth floor.”
Wasn’t that the floor for the president’s office?
Did Austyn send Kai down here?
For what?
Kira glanced around and noticed she’d become the centre of attention.
Her colleagues were pointing and whispering.
Shit.
She could imagine the looks on their faces If they knew she was married to the company’s president.
Kira wanted to bury her head in the cubbyhole.
Kai inched forward and said in a voice only Kira could hear, “Young Madam, Boss said if you won’t go up, he’ll come down here to personally escort you.”
That scoundrel!
Austyn had anticipated her reaction.
Kira bowed her head and followed the assistant to the lift.
She could feel every pair of eyes in the office on her back as she walked.
It made her want to disappear through a hole in the ground.
‘Is that the intern? How does she know the president’s PA?‘
‘No idea. Is the PA looking for her? Or the president?”
‘Has to be the PA. Why would the president know an intern like her?‘
“You’re probably right.”
Whispers started as soon as
as Kira and Kai were out of earshot.
Kira watched the lift door close and breathed out.
It was just the two of them in the cab.
The executive lift was reserved for the president and could only be accessed with the right keycard.
Kira sagged against the wall. ‘Kai, why does Austyn want to see me?”
The assistant spread out both hands. ‘I’ve no idea, Young Madam. Boss didn’t say anything. Just asked me to fetch you.
The lift deposited them on the 48th floor.
“This way.‘
Kira followed Kai down the carpeted hallway.
It was her first time setting foot on the 48th.
She passed a bullpen occupied by several secretaries.
They were four women and two men, all dressed professionally, all eyes on her as she walked by.
Kira picked up her pace.
Hanky–panky In The Office
Kai stopped outside the white oak double door and knocked.
‘Come in.‘
Kai pushed the door open, gesturing for Kira
o go in.
Kira stepped off the hallway onto the soft, off–white velour carpet, which absorbed the sound of her footfall and made her feel as if she was walking on cotton.
Austyn sat behind an imposing desk, both shirtsleeves rolled up.
A
huge flo
floor–to–ceiling window behind him offered an unimpeded view of the blue sky.
There was just something about a man hard at work, brows furrowed in concentration, that Kira found incredibly attractive.
Austyn had a pen in his right hand, a stack of documents in front of him and a tablet to the side.
Kira tiptoed over to the desk
Austyn’s head snapped up.
Kira stopped, her plan for a childish prank aborted.
Austyn tossed the pen onto the desk with a thud.
Kira hoped the sturdy–looking pen didn’t break.
She really needed to talk to him sometime about this bad habit of his, treating his belongings with such a cavaller attitude.
Austyn leaned back in his leather swivel chair. ‘Come here.”
Kira walked over.
He pulled her into his arms.
She smelled a faint minty fragrance.
Kira struggled. ‘Let go of me!‘
She couldn’t remember if Kal closed the door.
People could see them.
Austyn caught both of her wrists with one hand and pinched her cheek. ‘You deserve a good spanking.‘
“What did I do?” Kira tensed, afraid he might actually put her over his knees.
“This morning.”
“Huh?”
He flicked her forehead with a finger. “You ran straight into traffic.”
The light had turned green, or he would have gotten out of the car and chased after her.
Then he would drag her back into the Hummer and teach her a lesson.
“That’s why you called me up here?”
He could have just sent her a stern warning in a text.
“You don’t want others to know about us?”
‘I don’t,‘ she said honestly.
Austyn porsed his lips.

Kira twisted uncomfortably in the chair.
A sudden knock came from the door, followed by a pleasant woman’s voice Mr McCarty, your cofer’s ready.”
Kira panicked.
She was practically sitting on the man’s lap.
If someone saw them like this, Kira’s name would replace the love triangle in Product Development as the newest subject on the company grapevine
She struggled to get free, but the man had an iron grip on her wrists.
Kira pleaded with her eyes.
Austyn pretended not to understand her, still miffed by what she said just now.
He wasn’t going to hide.
Kira pricked up her ears.
She could hear the doorknob turning
The secretary was about to enter.
Kira sensed a sudden rush of air.
The door must have opened.
She bit down on Austyn’s wrist and, when he let go, slid off his lap and scrambled into the cubbyhole under the desk.
Austyn looked down at her, crouching on the floor with her nose almost touching his pants.
Did she know how suggestive this position was?
Austyn hid a smile.
Andrea came in, bearing a cup of hot black coffee on a tray.
