Austyn couldn’t deny it anymore–Kira knew Gideon Garner.
And they were more than just acquaintances.
When Gideon was shot, Kira had rushed to him and held him in her arms.
Her cries were heart–rending
She refused to leave Gideon’s side when he was taken to the hospital.
Austyn was there in the police vand
He watched Kira hold the man’s hand when a police officer administered first aid to Gideon
Uncontrollable sobs wracked her body as she clung to Gideon’s hand.
She didn’t even notice Austyn was there.
Austyn closed his eyes.
in her own injuries and his
At the moment, his wife was four stories below, crying over another man, ignoring her
Austyn gave a mocking smile, directed at himself. “So they knew each other way back then. No wonder she refuses to leave his side‘ He had been so, so stupid.

Damian sighed quietly. ‘Hey, don’t think that way. Gideon took a bullet for her. She’d be warried even if he were a stranger. If it weren’t for him, Kira could have died. Put yourself in her shoes. Wouldn’t you be grateful and concerned at the same time? Kira’s reaction is perfectly normal‘
Austyn looked away from Damian
*Kira probably sees the man as a brother, Damian speculated. ‘Gamer stayed with the Hewitts for four years. Leland Hewitt sort of adopted him as a son.
Damian patted Austyn’s shoulder, ‘Anyway, don’t overthink this. A lot has happened tonight. Everybody’s on edge, including you. Go home, have a good night’s rest, and when you’re more clear–headed in the morning, talk to Kira‘
Austyn said simply, ‘It’s getting late. Don’t let me keep you.”
Damian nodded, knowing his friend probably wanted to be left alone.
Luca saw Damlan come out of the office. ‘Wait for me.!
They had to head back to the station for debriefing
Luca said to Jesse, ‘Keep an eye on Austyn, will you? And do something about the bruises on his face‘
‘Will do.‘ Jesse nodded.
Alter Luca and Damian lett, Jesse traipsed back into his office.
Austyn was still standing in front of the window.
The doctor scratched his head.
Loca had briefed him on what happened tonight.
He was wrong; it was worse than a cage fight
Austyn could have died.
Jesse squared his shoulders.
He was determined to check on his friend’s injuries even if Austyn gave him the death stare.
“You don’t look so good, man, fesse ventured. ‘Will you just let me take a look at your face?”
There could be more injuries, less visible than the bruises and cuts and scrapes on Austyn’s Lace
Jesse was worried about internal bleeding.
Austyn would need an endoscopy and an X–ray, the sooner the better.
‘How are you feeling? Jesse plunged ahead despite Austyn’s silence. ‘Do you feel dizzy? Any other part of your body hurts? How about your stomach? I should get you to the Austyn!!
Austyn swayed on his feet, then he collapsed.
The dog days of summer were gone.
The sun was out, but its scorching power had waned.
Green leaves rustled in a gentle morning breeze.
The air was fresh and the flowers were booming.
But no one at the hospital was in the mood to enjoy the scenery.
Martin hurried back to the ICU, carrying coffee and ham & cheese sandwiches,
Gideon had come out of surgery two hours ago.
He was transferred from the operating room to intensive care
Doctors said he had been lucky.
The bullet missed his vital organs.
The wound was through and through.
If it had landed just a fraction of an inch to the left, it would have punctured the left ventricle of his heart and no amount of surgery could have saved him.
Martin’s knees almost gave out when he heard this.
Young Master had sneaked into the warehouse from the tunnel when he saw uniformed officers moving out.
Martin followed him, worried.
They’d come unarmed.
Martin tried to stop him, but Gideon tossed
Thinking of this, Martin sighed again.
If only he’d been strong enough to pull Young Master back
The doctors sald Gideon was not our of the woods yet.
He’d lost too much blood and mast stay in the ICU for at least another werk.
The surgery had lasted all night.
Kira sat on a bench outside and never moved.
Martin approached her slowly. “Miss Hewitt, you should eat something..
If it were up to him, he’d want nothing to do with the woman who almost caused Gideon’s death, albeit indirectly.
But Martin knew Gideon would be angry at him if he didn’t take care of Miss Hewitt
Kira didn’t appear to have heard him.
