The Straw That Broke The Camel’s Back
Kira tried to distract him. “What else do you want to know about me and Gideon?”
The topic of ex–boyfriend had to be a great mood killer, right?
I already know everything about you and hirn, Austyn said. ‘I don’t have any more questions.”
He planted another kiss on her clavicles.
His voice came out muffled. ‘Even if I have, I’m not going to waste time asking them now.
He unzipped her dress.
“I have more important things to do at the moment.
Kira felt the breezy night air on her exposed skin.
Her attempt to distract him had failed.
Austyn lifted the dress over her head.
His eyes were heavy with lust.
Kira heard her thumping heart.
She swallowed.
‘Damn,‘ she thought. “It’s going to be another long, long night.”
And she was right.
Kira woke up the next morning with Austyn’s arms around her.
She wriggled and woke him up.
‘Morning.’His voice was hoarse.
‘Morning ‘Kira closed her eyes again and luxuriated in the warmth of his embrace.
“What time is it?!
She glanced at the alarm clock on the nightstand. ‘You’re late for work.”
It was already nine thirty am.
The sun was high up in the sky.
Austyn sat bolt upright in bed.
He leaned down to kiss her forehead.
“I have a meeting at eleven. Have to run. You can sleep in. He smirked. ‘After all, you must be exhausted after last night.”
Kira grabbed her pillow and tossed it at the shameless man.
She pulled up the quilt over her head
Austyn padded into the bathroom, took a quick shower and got dressed.
Kira drifted back into sleep.
It was eleven o’clock when she opened her eyes again.
Other than soreness in her thighs, she was refreshed.
Elsie had laid out breakfast on the table when she bounded downstairs.
‘Morning‘ Kira greeted the housekeeper with a brilliant smile.
Over fluffy pumpkin pancakes and a blueberry smoothie, she mulled over what she heard last night.
Austyn said Liam and his father had something to do with Deborah’s death.
It happened a long time a
ago, and Austyn didn’t seem like he wanted to go into details.
Kira didn’t want to push him, but she was still curious.
Her eyes came to rest on the housekeeper wiping down the newel post and humming to herself.
‘Elsie‘
‘Yes?
‘I can’t finish all the food. Do you want to come and join me?
“But I’ve already eaten.”
“Please? I don’t want the food to go to waste.
“Okay.‘ Elsie washed her hands and took off her apron
She took a seat at the table.
‘Coffee? Milk? Smoothie?”
‘Tea is fine.”
Kira poured her a cup of hot Assam black tea and served her a heaping helping of Eggs Benedict,
Elsie held the china cup with both hands and sipped at her tea
Kira made small talk.
Elsie was into watching K–dramas recently.
She gushed about a handsome professor who was really an alien and used his special abilities to save the female lead.
When Kira sensed Elsie was in a communicative mood, she said, “There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”
‘What is it?‘
‘About Deborah. How did she die?‘
Elsie lowered her eyes and stared into her teacup. “Why do you want to know?”
