The doctor continued, ‘He showed up yesterday and just stood outside your father’s room. I got called away. When I went to check on your father at night, the man had left. Then he came again this morning. He just stood in the hallway and didn’t go inside. When I asked him who he was or what he was doing, he left without saying anything.” 

‘Are you sure he didn’t go into my father’s room? He didn’t do anything to my dad?” 

‘I’m sure. I keep a close watch on your father’s vitals. He’s fine and is sleeping undisturbed.‘ 

“Oh, okay. That’s good. Doctor, if the man comes back again, please let me know. I’ll go down there to take a look for myself.” 

‘Sure.”

“Stop dawdling!‘ Austyn rolled down the window and pointed at his watch. “We’re going to be late!”

Austyn shrugged. “Buckle up.” 

When they approached an intersection about 200 metres away from the office building, Kira motioned for Austyn to stop. “You can just let me out here. I’ll walk‘ 

Austyn pressed a button on the electronic dashboard. 

The lock on her side of the door thunked into place. 

Kira grabbed the handle and pushed. 

It didn’t move. 

“Why’d you lock the door?” 

Why are you so afraid of being seen with me?” 

‘I don’t want to become the centre of everyone’s gossip at the company, Kira said matter–of–factly. Which is bound to happen if 1 show up at the office with you.” 

Austyn didn’t seem happy about her answer. 

Kira cleared her throat. ‘What I mean is, people will start talking if they see me with you. They’ll speculate on the nature of our relationship. Then all kinds of rumours will fly. You don’t want me to become the fodder for salacious gossip, do you?‘ 

She blinked her big, round eyes at him, beseeching- 

Austyn kept his hands on the steering wheel, waiting for the lights to change. 

Kira grabbed his arm. ‘Come on. Please open the door. I really don’t want to be caught in a scandal.‘ 

Austyn remained unmoved. 

“Do you have any idea how gossipy people can be? If they see me getting out of your car, there’ll be twenty different stories circulating on the office grapevine by noon. The nicer stories will say you gave me a lift. The nastier ones will say you and I did something X–rated In the car. I know you don’t care about what others say about you, but I still have to-” 

“Enough!”

Austyn was tempted to let her out of the car just to shut her up. 

“Because you’re a good person.” 

Believing that flattery would get her everywhere, Kira lavished praise on the man. You have such a good track record. Even before we knew each other, you came to my rescue and saved my father. You’re like Prince Charming, Princely in looks and princely in deeds.

“Though Prince Charming is not crabby as you,” Kira thought. 

Austyn hid a smile. ‘Prince Charming rescues princesses. Are you implying that you’re a princess?” 

Kira wanted to throw up her hands.
