‘Miss Hewitt, could you step outside for a moment?” 

Kira turned around. 

It was Martin, Gideon’s assistant.

‘Coming!‘ Kira headed for the door. 

‘Stop!‘ Austyn barked out an order. 

‘Shush.‘ Kira spun around and glared at him. ‘You need to rest. Doctor Chase said you have a swollen tonsil. You shouldn’t talk so much. And have something important to tend to.” 

Austyn looked at her with a stony face. ‘If you step out that door, don’t ever come back.‘ 

Kira’s eyes widened. 

What did he say? 

‘Miss Hewitt, Martin urged. ‘Please come with me. Young Master’s awake. He wants to see you right now. He refuses to rest till he sees you there.” 

Kira glanced back and forth between him and Austyn, hesitant. 

Why was Austyn being so unreasonable? 

Gideon saved her life. 

She was just going to check on him and thank him. 

Why couldn’t Austyn be a little bit more understanding? 

She eyed the door. 

‘I’ll be gone for just a minute. I’ll be back as soon as I see he’s okay. You should get some rest. 

She was already at the door when she felt a force tugging on her wrist. 

‘He’s awake now, which means he’s fine. Why do you need to see him?‘ 

Kira turned around and looked Austyn in the eye. “I can’t rest easy till I see it with my own eyes.‘ 

She pleaded with him. ‘I promise I won’t be gone for long. Please, can I go?” 

Gideon took a bullet for her. 

She would have gone to see him even if he were a stranger. 

And Martin sounded genuinely anxious. 

Austyn’s voice was glacial. ‘Kira Hewitt, I forbid you from seeing him.‘ 

Kira stamped her foot, frustrated.. 

‘We don’t live in the feudal era. You can’t forbid me from doing anything. I just want to see how he’s doing. It’s just four stories below. It won’t take long. Half an hour, tops.”

He was shouting now. ‘Kira Hewitt, I’m your husband, and I forbid you from seeing that man!” 

Luca had inched away from the door, making himself invisible. 

Martin lingered in the hallway outside, unsure if he should come in.. 

Kira saw Austyn’s bloodshot eyes and the purplish bruise under his cheek. 

She swallowed nervously. ‘I know you’re my husband, but he…he’s my brother.‘ 

His last name is Garner. Yours is Hewitt. He’s not your brother.” 

‘Miss Hewitt,‘ Martin ventured. ‘We really should-‘ 

‘Shut up!‘ Austyn shot a venomous look at Martin. 

Martin shrank back, startled. 

Mr McCarthy looked like he was ready to kill him. 

Austyn turned his attention back to Kira. ‘I don’t care who he is or what kind of relationship. you used to have with him. You are not allowed to see him.‘ 

Kira forced herself to calm down. 

She knew she couldn’t beat Austyn physically, nor did she want to. 

But she could appeal to his reason. 

She said in as even a voice as she could manage, Put yourself in my shoes. If someone- anyone, your assistant, your friend, a stranger–took a bullet for you and almost died, and now he’s awake and wants to see you. What would you do? Would you refuse?? 

Would you be an ingrate? 

Austyn understood her unsaid question. 

He had no comeback to that. 

Kira gently removed his hand from her shoulders. ‘I’ll be right back, I promise. Then I’ll tell you everything about me and Gideon, okay?‘ 

If Austyn didn’t trust her because he knew nothing about her past, she would just have to tell him everything. 

Austyn’s face was granite. 

He let Kira pry his hand off and push him back. 

He watched her leave without a backward glance. 

He saw the door close. 

He heard her footsteps moving away. 

He stood there, facing the door, unmoving. 

Luca walked up to him. 

He patted Austyn’s shoulder. ‘You’re in love with her, man.‘ 

Even an outsider like him could see it. 

Austyn’s body went rigid. 

‘Don’t bother denying it,‘ Luca said. ‘I can see it in your eyes.‘ 

He sighed. ‘It’s been so many years since Deborah passed away. Time to let her go, man. She’s no longer here, but you are. And you have to move on. Learn how to love someone else. You shouldn’t be alone for the rest of your life.‘ 

Austyn shrugged Luca’s hand off his shoulder. I can love anyone else, just not Kira Hewitt!‘
