‘Then let’s go. The doctor’s waiting for us.‘ Austyn spotted Kai waving at him and pointing to his watch. 

Deborah stood up and followed him into the hospital. 

Giana cooled her heels in the lobby, waiting for her number to be called. 

There were just three more people ahead of her in the queue. 

She looked up from her phone screen and rotated her neck, feeling stiff. 

The stainless steel benches around her were mostly occupied. 

She studied the crowd out of boredom and wondered what illness drove them to the hospital. 

Two figures heading into the lift caught her attention. 

Giana blinked. 

They were gone in the next second, but she recognised the man’s face. 

She shot to her feet and dashed for the lift, but the door closed before she could get there. 

She watched the number on the display panel jump from One to Two, then stop at Four. 

She checked the directory next to the lift and swore. 

It was the floor for Obstetrics and Gynaecology. 

Giana veered left and bounded up the stairs.

Dinner was more than an hour ago, but Kira was still sprawled on the sofa, feeling stuffed. 

She rubbed her belly in a clockwise motion, aiding her digestive system. 

Elsie taught her the trick, but she was still waiting for it to work. 

On the flatscreen, a host was knocking on a door, with a cheque in one hand and a mallet in the other. 

Kira let herself fall into a post–dinner food coma. 

She kept one eye, barely open, on the TV and the other on her phone. 

It was past nine pm. 

Austyn hadn’t called. 

Was he still stuck at work? 

Kira debated calling him but then nixed the idea.

She didn’t want to be one of those wives who breathed down their husband’s neck. 

Besides, she wasn’t sure if she really wanted him to be back so soon. 

Kira sighed, thinking of what she planned to tell him tonight. 

Maybe this was her last night of peace before her world was turned upside down. 

She reached for her phone. 

A text message should work just as well as a call. 

The sudden ringtone startled her. 

‘Honey.‘ She answered the phone, thinking it was Austyn. 

“Your honey is a jerk!‘ 

It wasn’t Austyn’s voice. 

Kira moved the phone away from her ear and stared at the screen. 

‘Giana?‘ 

Her best friend was huffing like she’d been running. ‘Drop whatever you’re doing right now and get your ass down to Stamford General, stat!‘ 

She added, ‘To the fourth floor. The ob–gyn!‘ 

‘What?‘ Kira sprang to her feet. ‘Are you okay? What are you doing at the hospital?‘ 

A possibility occurred to her. ‘Oh my god, are you pregnant?‘ 

‘Not me, you dummy!‘ Giana said through gritted teeth. ‘Someone else is. And that person is pregnant with your husband’s baby!‘ 

Kira laughed. ‘Giana, stop pulling my leg.‘ 

Then she scratched her head. ‘I don’t really get the joke.‘ 

‘I’m not kidding!‘ Giana shouted into the phone. ‘I’m standing right outside the gynaecologist’s office. Your husband went in there with a woman two minutes ago. They’re still in there! Hurry and get your ass down here!‘ 

Kira blinked. ‘What?‘ 

‘This is not the time to pinch pennies. Get a cab and get down here, ASAP!‘ 

Giana stared at the closed door of the doctor’s office so hard as if she could see through it. 

She was hiding in the stairwell and peeking through the open doorway. 

‘I’ll stall them if they come out,‘ she whisper–shouted into the phone. ‘Come on, 

She hung up. 

Kira stared at the black screen blankly. 

She heard every word Giana said but couldn’t process its meaning. 

What woman? 

Could Giana be talking about Kayleigh? 

But Kira had staked out Sunglade Condo for two days in a row.
