He got dressed. 

‘Are you going to look for her?‘ Kira asked. 

You heard?” 

She nodded. 

‘The call from Deborah yesterday, she was probably calling for help.‘ Austyn picked up his phone and logged onto the security app. 

It took a while for the surveillance video to load. 

Kira watched his downcast eyes and solemn–looking face. 

She bit her lower lip. ‘Are you blaming me for snatching away your phone? I didn’t let you answer the call. I didn’t let you save her.” 

‘I didn’t say that.‘ Austyn frowned. ‘Don’t overthink this.” 

“Then can you stay?‘ She pleaded with him. ‘Don’t go!‘ 

Austyn stared at his phone screen in disbelief. 

Deborah was really in trouble. 

Kira stepped towards him. ‘She is no longer your girlfriend or fiancée. It’s over between the two of you a long time ago. You said so yourself! She can take care of herself.” 

“Kira, I have-‘ 

‘Don’t go!‘ She grabbed his hand. ‘I’m your wife now. You should stay with me! How do you think it makes me feel when you leave me to see your ex–girlfriend?‘ 

‘Deborah’s in danger.‘ 

“Then call the police!‘ Kira was adamant. ‘Call Captain O’Neill. Let the police handle this. She’s not your responsibility!‘

Austyn set down his phone. 

He held her face with both hands and looked straight into her eyes. ‘I have to go, Kira. She’s no longer my girlfriend, but she’s still a friend. She doesn’t have anyone else in her life. She’s all alone. If I don’t help her, no one will.‘ 

Deborah was crucial in the plan to track down Santoro. 

Austyn had to find her, dead or alive. 

Kira refused to let go of his arm. ‘Why can’t she go make some friends of her own? Why must she insist on worming her way back into your life? You got her a place to live. You bought clothes for her. ‘No!‘ Kira shook her head vehemently. ‘I don’t want you to go!! 

‘Come on, Kira. It’s not like I’ll be gone forever. I’ll be back before dinner.‘ Austyn removed his hand. ‘Don’t be like this, okay?” 

Kira stared at him. ‘You’re really leaving?” 

‘I have to.” 

He would call the police, but he would also need to take a look at the scene for himself. 

‘What if I don’t want you to go?” 

‘Kira, be good.‘ 

‘Answer me. If I ask you to stay, will you?‘ Her face was expressionless. ‘As your wife, I’m
