He ended the call, put his phone back into his pants pocket and whirled around. ‘You could’ve done so in the beginning and saved us all some time.‘ 

An hour later, three cars pulled up outside a disused scrapyard in the suburbs. 

Sebastian got out of the first car. 

He pointed to the locked gate of the scrapyard. ‘She’s in there.‘ 

“Lead the way.‘ Luca climbed out after him. 

Sebastian shuffled towards the rusty iron gate. 

Luca waited for Austyn to catch up with him. 

Tie tilted his head. ‘Why is he still here?‘

The two McCarthy brothers pulled off the bluff with no prior communication. 

Austyn ignored Luca’s chattering and kept his eyes on Sebastian, who’d unlocked the gate. 

‘What about you?‘ Luca bumped his shoulder against Austyn’s. ‘Do you still have feelings for Deborah?” 

‘No.‘ Austyn didn’t slow down. ‘Not now, not ever, and not in the past. 

‘What?‘ Luca pulled up short. ‘No way!” 

‘We’re here.‘ Sebastian stopped and pointed to a shed less than ten metres away.

The shed was a stand–alone structure with a corrugated metal roof and unpainted concrete 

walls. 

The front door was made of iron and shut tightly 

‘Miss Connelly’s inside,‘ Sebastian said. ‘I put two men with her.” 

He was waiting for Henry to come back before deciding on what to do with Deborah. 

Luca gestured with his hand. 

Four officers jogged towards the shed. 

Austyn remained where he was. ‘You’re the one who staged her death seven years ago, right?” 

Sebastian nodded. 

Now that Deborah had come back to Stamford, there was no point hiding it anymore. 

‘Has she been staying under house arrest for the past seven years?” 

‘What?‘ Sebastian shook his head. ‘No, of course not. After I put Miss Connelly on a plane out of the country, I dispatched a couple of men to keep an eye on her. She was given enough money to live comfortably for the rest of her life. The men were there to prevent her from returning to Stamford. She was free to go anywhere else.” 

‘Austyn narrowed his eyes. ‘So she wasn’t under surveillance for the past seven years?‘ 

‘She wasn’t. Well, she was, but only for the first couple of months. My men were told to tail her and stop her if she tried to buy a plane ticket back to the country. But she never did so. I recalled my men after a while, since it appeared she’d accepted her fate and was settling into her new life nicely.” 

Sebastian glimpsed the black look on Austyn’s face and mistook it for anger at what he did. 

He added in a hurry, ‘Please understand, Young Master Austyn, we never intended to hurt Miss Connelly. Master McCarthy just didn’t think she was a suitable wife for you.‘ 

Austyn sneered. 

The majordomo’s tone was reverential, but his words were dripping with arrogance.

‘He doesn’t get to decide who is a suitable wife for me and who’s not,‘ Austyn said with a steely edge to his voice. ‘It’s not his call to make 

‘But you’re the eldest son and heir of the McCarthy family. It’s only right that your wife should be someone from an appropriate-‘

‘Sebastian, are you getting senile, or being deliberately dense? I’ve not spent a single cent from the McCarthy family since I turned eighteen. I moved out. I started my own company. I have zero interest in becoming the old man’s heir.‘ 

Henry had wanted Austyn to start taking over the family business when he turned eighteen, which was what drove Austyn to join the army. 

He left Cedarwood Mansion and never looked back. 

Austyn crossed his arms. “The only thing I’ll inherit from him is this cursed family name. And I would’ve changed it if my mother allowed me to.” 

He looked straight at Sebastian. ‘Thave cut my ties with the family. Think twice before you make a move on any of my people in the future. I went easy on you today for old times‘ sake, but there won’t be a next time. You don’t want to find out what I’m capable of if you cross me again.‘ 

Sebastian’s mouth was hanging open. 

His lips moved but no sound came out. 

‘Relay this message to the old man,‘ Austyn said coldly. ‘Stay away from me. And stay out of my life.‘ 

Before Sebastian could say anything, Luca shouted from the shed, ‘Austyn, come here!” 

His voice was anxious. 

Austyn sprinted over. 

Sebastian was closed on his heels. 

Luca was on the phone, calling for an ambulance, 

‘Deborah’s slit her wrists,‘ he said to Austyn. 

“What?‘ Sebastian flinched. ‘How could…” 

‘She asked for a steak knife to cut her meat.‘ A man came out of the shed, looking shame- 

faced. 

His arms were pinned behind his back by two officers. 

He was one of the two men Sebastian sent to watch over Deborah. 

At first, he’d thought it was a simple assignment. 

The woman was frail and unarmed. 

What were the odds of her escaping? 

She had been rather docile when she was brought to the shed last night. 

The man took pity on the attractive and fragile–looking lady. 

Which was why he gave in when she begged for a steak knife. 

Everything had been fine. 

She was just sitting there, eating her steak quietly and graciously.
