Her wrists were burning like they were on fire. 

If she tried to sit up, she would faint. 

Austyn nodded. ‘You should get some rest.” 

The doctor told him to watch out for signs of a second attempt at self–harm, but it didn’t seem like Deborah was going to try it again. 

There were no knives in the ward. 

She was too weak to move, anyway. 

Austyn wanted to ask why she cut her wrists if she thought he was on the way, but he held

This was not a time to grill her.

‘I’ve been here for more than three hours,‘ Austyn said. ‘It’s time for me to go home.‘ 

Deborah caught the tender look on his face and knew it wasn’t directed at her. 

He was eager to go home, to get back to Kira. 

She struggled to sit up in bed. ‘No, please don’t go.” 

Austyn stepped back. ‘You shouldn’t move around so much.‘ 

Her chest was heaving with the effort of drawing in air. ‘I don’t want you to go.” 

“There’s nothing for me to do here. A nurse will come by to check on you every hour. You’ll be fine here.‘ 

‘Can’t you stay with me, just for a while longer?”
