Austyn wrote the script and prepped Deborah, forcing her to go over her lines again and again. 

They just landed in Blumore this afternoon. 

Austyn returned to his hotel room. 

He didn’t switch on the lights, found the bed in the dark and fell onto it. 

If everything went as planned, he could be back in Stamford in two days. 

But if it didn’t. 

Kira’s face flashed before his eyes. 

He had been away for almost three days. 

He’d misplaced his phone in all the confusion to check Deborah out of the hospital.

Austyn, Deborah and Kai drove straight to the airport in the pre–dawn hours and got on the first available flight. 

There had been no time to look for his phone or buy a new one. 

Kira must have called him a hundred times by now. 

He could imagine how mad she was. 

His ears were burning. 

Was she cursing him right now? 

She wasn’t the type to swear. 

The most vicious words she’d ever used were ‘Jerk‘ and ‘bastard,‘ and they were both directed 

at him. 

Austyn placed a hand over his heart. 

It was beating rapidly and irregularly, as if trying to send him a message in Morse code. 

‘You miss her,‘ the message said. 

Austyn knew that. 

He missed her like crazy. 

He closed his eyes and visualised her face. 

Her cheeks would be puffed out, her lower lip jutting in a pout. 

Her face would be flushed with anger. 

Where was she right now? 

What was she doing? 

Was she stamping her feet in annoyance when her call couldn’t get through? 

Was she bad–mouthing him to her friend Giana? 

Stamford was fourteen hours ahead of Blumore. 

Was she still sleeping? 

Austyn sat up in bed. 

He grabbed the landline phone on the nightstand and dialled her number from memory. 

He heard the dial tone.. 

His pulse quickened. 

What would be her first words when she picked up? 

Would she yell at him or cry? 

Would she call him ‘bastard‘ again? 

What should he tell her if she asked where he was 

Austyn tapped a finger on the table. 

But none of his predictions came to pass, 

The phone just kept on ringing until the service provider cut it off. 

Austyn was about to try again when a knock came on the door. 

“Boss.” 

He set down the receiver and opened the door for Kai 

‘Boss, I got this for you.‘ The assistant handed over an iPhone 11 still in its package, along with a SIM card. ‘They don’t have the latest model. 

‘It’s fine.‘ Austyn took the package. 

‘I checked our luggage again. Your old phone’s not inside. Sorry, boss.”
