The sage look in his eyes frightened her. 

“Henry McCarthy.’ He spat out the name in a voice dripping with wenom. 

Kira was dumbfounded 

Austyn’s father was responsible?

Why would he hurt his own wife?

Austyn was reluctant to go into details. 

He would fly into a rage every time the topic came up.

“He poisoned Mom’s food,‘ he said simply. 

After Charlotte was diagnosed with MODS, the doctors carried out an extensive study of her living environment to try to identify the underlying cause. 

They examined her diet, her exercise routine, her clothing, and her room. 

They ruled out sepsis, physical trauma, severe hums and six other possibilities. 

The only plausible cause that remained was poison 

Kira trembled at the menacing look on Austyn’s face. 

She knew it wasn’t directed at her, but she was still unnerved.

She glimpsed the caller ID and declined the call immediately. 

“Who was that?” Austyn asked. 

He was glad for the distraction 

He was afraid he might lose his temper if he kept talking about his SOB of a father

Austyn scowled. ‘Has he been bothering you while I was gone?! 

Kira debated telling him about the time Gideon almost forced her to get an abortion, but this did not seem like the right time. 

Austyn had more than enough on his plate at the moment. 

So she said simply, ‘He keeps calling, but don’t worry, I never pick up.” 

“Why don’t you block his number? 

‘He would just get a new one and try again. I might answer it accidentally if I don’t know it’s him.” She shrugged, ‘better the devil you know.‘ 

Sensing Austyn’s anger, she held his hand. ‘Don’t worry. I’ve decided to freeze him out of my life. I’m never answering his calls again. He’ll go away after a while.” 

Austyn nodded, though he wasn’t completely appeased. “You should have cut ties with him a long time ago. Staying friends with an ex? You’re just asking for 

trouble.” 

“Hey!” Kira protested. “Everybody has a past. People who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. It’s not like you don’t have your string of ex–girlfriends! “String? How many ex–girlfriends do you think I have?” 

“Well, there’s Kayleigh, for starters‘ 

Austyn capped a knackle on her forehead. How many times must I tell you? She’s not my gidfriend. Never was, never will be.!

“Just a thought.” She shrugged. Then our child will have a big brother to play with. That’s actually kind of nice.” 

Austyn couldn’t resist pinching her nose, ‘Our child will have plenty of playmates. I don’t need to take in someone else’s boy for that to happen.‘
