Austyn leaned against the leather headrest and closed his eyes. 

He had not slept for almost three days.

‘Last night and earlier this morning, four department beads have tendered their resignation.” 

Austyn opened his eyes, 

‘The HR department is swamped right now.‘ Kai checked his phone. “I just got another update from Paul. Employees from the retail subsidiary are resigning en masse. They just handed in their notice. 

What reason did they give? 

Kaiserolled through the email. Transitioning to another career. Lack of promotion opportunities. The usual load of bull.” 

The assistant pursed his lips. “I called them, all four department heads. Two of them were dodging my calls. One didn’t give me any details, just said he’s willing to pay salary in lieu of notice.” 

The head of purchasing had sounded contrite over the phone, but he refused to divulge the true reason for leaving. 

“not the finance manager did let something slip. He mentioned Master McCarthy’s name.” 

Austyn sat up straighter, 

I’ve been on the phone with Paul all morning. He’s doing some digging. Six of the retail employees who resigned last night showed up at Revency today.” ‘Liam Cane’s company.”
