Is He In Love With Kayleigh? 

‘Go on,‘ Austyn said. 

‘Helen left Mr Hewitt when Young Madam was just a kid. After her father’s accident, Young Madam went to Helen, presumably to borrow money, but I don’t think she got it.” 

Austyn remembered the pitiful, stray–cat look of Kira when he first saw her. 

He found her in a cramped and dank basement. 

She would not have been living in squalor if she had gotten a loan. 

‘After that, Helen seemed to have cut all ties with Young Madam,‘ Kai continued. “She never came to visit Mr Hewitt, either. Yet, for some reason, she showed up at the hospital yesterday and slipped past the front desk nurse. She wasn’t in there for long, but after she left, a nurse was alerted by the monitor in Mr Hewitt’s ward. He was showing signs of agitation. Fortunately, it was nothing serious. Helen and Georgina came by again this morning, which is what you saw.” 

Austyn took a drag on his cigarette and closed his eyes. 

He couldn’t be blamed for not recognising Helen as Kira’s mother. 

From the way the woman treated Kira, he would have pegged her as Kira’s sworn enemy. 

‘Dig out more about Michael Vaugh,” he said after a while. “And about this Veron Enterprise of his. We’ll see how enterprising he is once he gets on the M Group’s hit list. It’s a dog–eat–dog world out there. Wouldn’t surprise me if another company goes belly up. 

“‘Yes, Boss.” Kai nodded. 

His boss didn’t get agitated easily, but when he did, it was the scorched earth policy for him. 

Michael Vaugh might be a nice guy and a model husband, but he made a mistake when he married Helen Raynor. 

Kai was pretty sure that when this was over, the name of Veron Enterprise would be history. 

Companies much bigger than it had taken on the M Group before. 

They now joined a growing list of bankrupt organisations.

Kai’s mouth went wide open. ‘Who–I’ll get right on it.” 

‘No, it’s not that urgent. Deal with the Vaughns first.” 

‘Yes, Boss.” 

In the ward, Kira was massaging ointment over the wounds on her arms.

The topical cream smelled different from the one Dr Chase had applied. 

It was light yellow and smelled like pine, plus something else that made Kira hungry. 

It was almost lunchtime now. 

She had not eaten breakfast. 

Kira glanced at her father, who had a feeding tube Inserted through his nose. 

A milky liquid dripped slowly in the tube. 

‘Dad, when you wake up, what do you want your first meal to be?‘ she asked. ‘Doctors will probably recommend something light. How about congee? I make a mean seafood congee now. You should try it. I mix crabstick, salmon flakes, and wok–tossed prawns. And scallops sometimes. No soy sauce or MSG. It’s soft and creamy. Makes your mouth water…” 

A knock on the door interrupted her monologue. 

Kai came in. 

‘Young Madam, Boss is waiting outside. It’s time to go home.” 

‘Okay.” 

She leaned over and planted a kiss on her father’s forehead. ‘Bye, Dad, Will you think about the menu? I’ll work on my cooking skills. When you wake up, you can order whatever you want.” 

She followed Kai out of the ward. 

The two walked in silence. 

Kira glanced at the assistant. 

He was Austyn’s right–hand man, 

Maybe he could help her clarify something. 

‘Mr Scott, can I ask you something?” 

“Sure, Young Madam. By the way, you can call me Kai. 

“Okay, I’ll do that if you call me Kira.” 

‘Deal.” 

‘But only when the boss is not around,” Kai added in his heart. 

‘What’s the, uh, the nature of the relationship between Kayleigh and your boss?‘ 

Kira couldn’t get Dr Chase’s words out of her mind. 

He said if a man loved a woman, he would not hurt her. 

The more she mulled it over, the more she realised it made sense. 

If Austyn was in love with Kayleigh, why would he break her heart by marrying someone else? 

“Um…” Kai’s eyes darted around. 

It was just the two of them in the corridor. 

‘Why do you want to know?” 

‘Just curious.”

Kai picked up his pace. 

“Please? Pretty please?‘ Kira jogged alongside him. You’ve been working for him for so long. You have to know the answer. Or are you refusing to tell me because I’m a nobody? Your boss doesn’t care about me, so you’re taking your cue from him?” 

“What?” Kai stopped abruptly. That’s not- 

‘That’s not true!‘ the assistant shouted in his heart. If Boss doesn’t care about you, why did he ask me to check out the Vaughns? Why did he break his own rule about never raising a hand against a woman and gripped Georgina’s wrist? Why did he lose his cool in public and lashed out at Helen?” 

‘If that’s not the case, then will you please tell me?‘ Kira begged with her eyes. 

“Young Mada-” 

‘Kira. 

‘Kira, I really shouldn’t say anything. 

‘Come on. Will you at least tell me, is Kayleigh important to your boss? I’m asking for your opinion, not your boss‘. That’s not against the rules, right?” 

“Um…” 

“It’s just a yes or no question.” 

“Before that, could you tell me why you’re suddenly so interested in this topic?‘ Kai asked, buying time.
