Austyn and Gideon exchanged greetings with a simple hod. 

Gideon picked a restaurant known more for its discreet service than its food. 

They were in a private dining room. 

Both men waited till the waiter left and closed the door 

Austyn gave his host a quick once–over. “It’s been a few years since we last saw each other. I guess congratulations are in order.” 

“What for?” 

“For taking over control of the Garner family, of course 

Gideon took a sip of the Screaming Eagle sauvignon blanc. 

He looked Austyn directly in the eye. ‘How can you tell?” 

Austyn tilted his chin towards the door. “You have four bodyguards, fully armed. One of them is ex–Special Forces, if I’m not wrong. And he used to be a faithful servant to your grandfather, I met him once. He left quite an impression. But now I see he has pledged his allegiance to you‘ 

Gideon hid his surprise. 

Austyn might be a businessman now, but he hadn’t lost his sharp eye honed in the military. 

‘You ran a check on me?’ Gideon narrowed his eyes. 

‘I did some asking around, Austyn said. ‘Plus a bit of guesswork. When I have dinner with someone, I’d like to know the party is not a threat.” 

‘Fair enough.‘ Gideon smiled faintly. 

A man in Austyn’s position could never be too careful. 

Gideon would have done the same if the shoe was on the other foot. 

“How long are you in town for?‘ 

Austyn held the stem of the crystal glass and gave it a slight swirl. Two more days to close a deal. What about you?’ 

‘I’m heading to Stamford after dinner.” 

‘Then let’s fix a time for dinner in Stamford after I return. I’ll do my best as a host.” 

The two chatted amicably and caught up on old times 

A waiter knocked on the door and waited to be summoned inside. 

Steak was served. 

Gideon cut into the rare Wagyu tomahawk steak, savouring its soft and juicy centre. 

Austyn wrinkled his nose and made no move to pick up the steak knife. 

‘You don’t like it? Gideon asked when he noticed Austyn ignoring his food. It can be hard to accept the smell of blood at first. But once you get used to it, you’ll grow to love it. There’s nothing like a rare steak to satisfy a man’s carnivorous appetite.”

Austyn did not comment. 

Instead, he asked, “What business do you have in Stamford?‘ 

‘Not business, a personal matter.‘ Gideon wiped the corners of his mouth with a silk serviette. “A rather important one.” 

“Oh, what is it?” 

Gideon took a swig of the white wine. 

He gazed off into space. “Getting back my lost treasure. 

‘Treasure? Someone stole from you?” 

‘This treasure can walk and talk and has feelings. I lost her three years ago, and now I want to get her 

back‘ 

‘Must be someone special, huh?” Austyn teased. ‘Let me know when you find her. Good luck with the treasure hunt.” 

Gideon clinked glasses with Austyn. ‘Thanks.” 

After dinner, Austyn returned to The Ritz–Carlton while Gideon set off for Stamford. 

Austyn had downed several glasses of wine on an empty stomach. 

He was feeling a little light–headed as the alcohol kicked in. 

Kai swiped the key card and held the door open. 

Austyn walked in, pulling on his tie at the same time. 

He suddenly stopped. 

Kal, one step behind, almost bumped into his boss. “What’s wrong?” 

Scowling, Austyn stared at the figure in bed. 

Kai followed his gaze and saw a woman. 

She was wearing a sheer mesh dahlia pink–babydoll, a matching thong and a pair of ankle–strap heels with 

a cut–out toe. 

Nothing else. 

She stood up immediately when she saw the men enter, her ample bosom bouncing as she did so. 

‘Sir, I’ve drawn a hot bath for you.” 

Her words were directed at Austyn, who remained motionless. 

Kai stepped forward to guard his boss. ‘Who are you? How did you get in here?” 

The assistant towered over the woman and glowered at her. 

The woman shuddered. 

Her cheeks were flushed, but whether it was from fear, shame or just skilled application of rouge, Kai Can’t tell. 

M…Mr Hudson gave me the key card…. 

Hudson, CEO of Promoplex, had been chewed out by the president this morning. 

Austyn was disappointed by the man’s laid–back, almost cavalier attitude towards management. 

My Lost Treasure 

Under his two–year leadership, the energy subsidiary’s growth has plateaued. 

Austyn gave him an ultimatum–either be good, or be gone.
